I finally finished up my Canadian Sherman Troop:



These chaps are from B Squadron, 1st Canadian Hussars (6th Armoured Regiment, 2nd Independent Canadian Armoured Brigade) who were in direct support of the 7th Brigade on D-Day. The models are all from West Wind Productions.

Their call signs are Bison, Beaver, Buffalo, and Bighorn. I just made them up as I was unable to find any listing of the 1st Hussars call signs. I had briefly considered using "Bacon" as one of them... but then didn't...

These ones... not too bad. pretty easy, I guess. The outter turret hatch will probably break off at some point and a simple instruction sheet might have been handy.

I have some T-34s that I'm working on that aren't so bad either.

I have some German tanks, however, that I'm dreading - quite a few little fiddley bits with no instructions as to where they should go. Maybe when I have a closer look things will seem more apparent.

Army Group North Models are my favourite by far. They didn't have some of the things I was looking for at the time and... well.. the price was right (I picked these and a bunch more at 40% during their summer sale).

You've made up my mind, not buying West Wind models, I just don't have the patience or skill!

I've have a soft spot for the Bolt Action/Warlord armour, few pieces and paint up well!

Have you seen Juno Beach on the Canadian History Channel? It was REALLY well done; Similar to BOB but the Canadian version covering the Airborne, Armour, and Infantry. The 1st half is the dramatized story with actors and re-enactors (?). The second half consists of interviews with Veterans. I think it's available on DVD too.

If it's the one I think you're referring to it's a die cast 1/48 truck. I think it might have been red originally with the Coca-cola logo on it...? I have two primed both black and started painting one of them green.

Have you seen Juno Beach on the Canadian History Channel?

I have not seen it yet. Definitely something I want to check out! I've heard mixed reviews, however. A good friend of mine said it was visually well done but the writing/history and acting wasn't so great. I guess if I go into it fearing the worst I will hopefully be pleasantly surprised!

Lovely stuff! The 1st Hussar museum is a 15 minute walk from my house. I'll see if I can find out something for you. It may be a while though. They aren't open very often.

In 1969, fishermen in the harbor of Courselles-sur-Mer in France discovered one of the Regiment's D-Day tanks. With the assistance of a local marine salvage company and the Royal Canadian Dragoons from Lahr, Germany, the tank was recovered from the sea where it had rested for more than twenty-five years. Thanks to an ambitious financial campaign by the Association and the Regiment, this "A" Squadron DD tank "ANEMIC was restored and dedicated, under the erroneous name of "Bold", at Juno Beach on June 6, 1971 as a Canadian memorial initially to the 1st Hussars and later to all those units that landed on D-Day.

They are "28mm" - but on the smallish side of "28mm" - I think West Wind Vehicles are 1/60.

At 28mm there is always just enough detail to mean no corner cutting and if you don't get it spot on, it can be incredibly unforgiving, but you nailed them. Excellent work, sir.
