Trenches?

I am currently in the process of making a gaming table for 28mm miniatures and would like to make some WW1 trenches for it, I have no clue where to start so any tips or the like would be appreciated

Ok,

there are several websites showing trenches. I like gaming-boards with trenches integrated. A lot of people use there boards and put stand-alone-trenches on it.

Hi,

i started with:

Finally i decided on taking two 3cm plates of styrodur (insulating foam),
cutting trenches and dugouts in one and glue it on top of the other.
But as i did not start, no pictures yet, sorry.

I once built some trenches.  It turned out to be a lot less work than I had feared.  I planned the activity in advance, and decided to go with 3 boards, each 2'x4'.  I glued on some blue insulating foam - the sort used for houses.  I learnt the hard way that you should map out the trenches first, then cut the foam, and only then glue in place!  I did it in the wrong order (as you can see from the photos) and then had to excavate the trenches from the board.

Hi,

stand-alone-trenches are quite appropriate for costal areas of Flandern where the water table is high.



Mr. Bailies Projekt is about what I have in mind.
But, Ill take two 3cm insulation boards instead of one 6cm one.
Cut out trenches in one BEFORE I glue it to the other. 
BTW thanks for the pictures! Ill try to return the favour as soon as i started mine.

i could start sculpting some trenches parts, but not the whole hill! just the floor and the walls, so many times cheaper!

could you guys be interested? ^^

yep, something similar. i was thinking about something more accurate and "thinner", with more details and variation, but the concept is that one.

Didn't someone do a class project with their son recently, used pink insulation foam board and matchsticks for the trench sides, bloody lovely but can't think who. Want to say Captain Blood but think I'm very wrong. I'll have a dig....

Made this week with my 14 year old son for his school project.

Basically matchstick pathways laid onto PVA, pink foam offcuts to create the blocks of earth, matchstick revetments (you glue these onto paper instrips then cut up to make the walls). Then a dab of Tetrion over the top of the groundwork and finished with the usual sand / grit / PVA / paint gloop mix. Then titivated a bit!

The sandbags are from Milliput.
The corrugated iron is erm... a bit of dissected cardboard box, PVA'd and painted. 
I had to pay £2 GBP for a big bag of matchsticks, and an outrageous £1.35 GBP for 24 yards of 28 gauge jewellery beading wire ( :wink: ) to make some barbed wire etc. (although the barbed wire isn't actually barbed, but good enough for these purposes)
Few twigs and bits of balsa. That's about it.
Everything else from my modelling store cupboard, including an offcut of MDF to mount it on... Total real cost, I reckon about £5.00 GBP  :mrgreen:

But several evenings of making, and a lot of today spent painting.

I drew inspiration from the Great War minis site, and based the layout on a page found in a Times Atlas of warfare. Not very detailed research I'm afraid, but think we got most of the important features...

I don't have any WW1 figures, so have included a couple of WW2 chaps for scale purposes...

I hope his history teacher likes it!
Junior did most of the donkey work. I did some of the more artistic bits  :wink:

Counter sink into the game board, or a built piece put onto the game board. Basic decision is there for you. Variables mainly are storage space you have and amount of time/cash to spend on the project. Though I have seen strips of card stock slapped down with figs standing on them.... bleh.
