HOw to paint red hair?
« on: 13 December 2010, 05:25:43 PM »
Could someone tell me which colors they use for red or strawberry-blond hair?

Thanks.

Black and red mixed to taste for base colour, then highlight with red or mix in some yellow for a more fiery look. Don“t highlight with mixed in white - it will turn the hair pink...

With citadel colours, I basecoat the hair with Vermin Brown (redish brown) and then highligh with blazing orange. The result is fine but you can also blend the colors together by using a "devlan mud" wash (for a darker result) or "ogryn flesh wash" for a more redish result.

example of the above:

My girlfriend painted some of her sisters of sigmar with red gore hair given a magenta ink and some other wash. The colour is very red but for some reason looks more natural then it should.

Thanks for you help, folks.

By the way, I am going for natural strawberry-blonde/red hair, not dyed punk-rocker hair.

Miniature Paints Rust or Terracotta washed with Devlin Mud or Army Painter medium quickshade gives a natural looking red hair

I asked Eric Johns a while back how he painted hair, and not only did he give me some great advice that worked very well, but the discussion also turned to hair colouration (including redheads) and how to achieve different natural-looking tones.

The thread is here on the Wyrd boards, and I think it is well worth a read.

I generally suck at painting hair, but the advice Eric gave me was very simple and helpful - both for the colours and for painting the hair itself.

Personally, I start with GW Bestial Brown, overbrush with Flaming Orange, highlight with Desert Yellow or another very light yellowy brown then wash with chestnut ink. Looks like this:

Maybe a little too dark for what you're after?

Not too dark at all.  That's a great example.  Thanks heaps!

As so far ther's been only answers for dark reds I'll put in my advise for really bright strawberry blond hair. For that purpose I use a bright orange as a base colour and highlight/drybrush it the same way as blonde hair, with a mix of GW Iyanden darksun and white. The result will be more a sort of reddish blond than truly red, but then again that's what most real red hair look like.
Far less active than I used to...

Great idea.  I'll try that this weekend.

Does anybody use Vermin Brown and Bleached Bone?  I tried that on Hassle Free's Sadie and it looked okay but a lot like the dyed hair my buddy's wife has.  Not quite natural but, oddly, believable.
