Giant steampunk mech from Privateer Press
« on: 17 January 2011, 08:55:01 PM »
Now I'm aware that "Giant Steampunk Mech" describes just about everything that Privateer Press does, but I think the image shows that this one is going to be a bit more giant and a bit more steampunk than usual:

There should be a photo of the finished model within the next month, decked out in Cygnar blues and yellows, but I reckon it'll scrub up lovely with some steampunk brass and wood tones...

Well, they do have a history of charging top dollar, albeit for good product, I'll agree. I had a couple of their earlier figures and found them to be good value for money, but that doesn't detract from the fact that price-wise, they are in the top quarter of the market.

@topic, I'm not quite sure what to make of that design. Looks awfully vulnerable for a war engine (which I assume it is?).

I'm afraid that I don't like it at all and I have to agree that PP are trying to follow in GW's footsteps where pricing is concerned.

I don't really like it, the design looks too 'manga-steampunk'. Not just steampunk, just a little bit too contrived. I also find that PP stuff fsuffers from the same thing as GW stuff, in that it is instantly recognisable as being for the game it is made for. That is a realy turn off for me.  :(

Oh, dear, I'm on the outs again...   :'(

I have to think it's a bit of a departure from 'jacks, and welcome at that. If anything, the leg structure suggests recent GW chaos machines.

The price thing: even with an owner's discount, all game stuff is too dear, and I keep toying with toys.

Alas, doesn't stop me from hoping this casts as fetching as it's drawing.

Thanks, TJohn for the heads up!

Doug

Couldn't agree more.
I can't actually see a single part of it that could even be described as vaguely Victorian...

That need not be a criterion of exclusion...

I'm more irritated since I cannot figure out the purpose. Is it a walking disco ball (read, lightning projector? I seem to recall Cygnar being affiliated to electricity, or thunder-somethings)? That and the lack of protection visible, although it might have a force-field or some magical whotsit.

I should have thought it was obvious: a mobile planetarium projector!  lol

It's a giant lightning generator, used by the Cygnar Stormsmiths. Examples of others;

I like it. It'll be around £50/$85, it's a resin model and is mounted on a 120mm base. Each faction is getting a different one. Doubt I'd use it for VSF stuff but I like it.

I wouldn't worry too much about its effectiveness or purpose. I hear the software is Windows-based so it'll just stand there and wait for the 2.1 upgrade. It does explain the hair though.
