My Samurai collection
« on: 23 January 2011, 04:46:31 PM »
I was getting out my samurai and sorting them out ready for Salute and I thought I'd take a couple of piccys to share  :)

I've got about the same amount in 'fresh' lead to paint up  ::)

(Piccys are a bit dark because I'm rubbish at taking them  :? )

The whole lot

Left wing

Right wing

Centre

The clans that are there include Miyoshi, Sanada (two family branches), Shimazu, Murakami, Furuta and Ikko Ikki. There are a few 'spare' banner bearers and samurai that have different heraldry but no home yet.

The problem I find is that once you start one clan, another pops it's head up when researching and you think "Ooo, they're pretty, I'll do them instead"  lol

cheers

James

Well!

Just goes to show that even crappy photos can't ruin really nice minis..  :-X

 ;)

Nice job.   :-*

I love Samurai dudes but have never dared to paint them because of the incredible amount of detail and those blasted little flags...

A really great collection, James.
And having seen most of it in the flesh, the photos don't do it justice.

I can hardly believe a craftsman of your talents doesn't have a big eff-off daylight lamp you could have shone on these for the piccies  ::)  ;)

Absolutely fantastic! I think I've seen these at Salute, are you the bloke that sells the Japanese buildings?

If so the Captain's right, a couple of big fuck off light bulbs is in order.  8)

Your pics don't do them justice, the army is beautiful  :-*

I agree with the above statement.
I too have seen these in the flesh and they are lovely. So nice that they put me off ever trying to do Samurai as the level of detail is just down right scary :o

Where did you get the referance pictures from for the colours and such?

Thanks for the comments chaps.

Better photos will be taken soon  :)

@ manic _miner - I use various sources and make some of it up. General rule of thumb is to keep the samurai armour dark with brighter lacings (works better for figures) and to try and keep the ashigaru uniformed. Not all the clans had uniformed troops but it works for the table top. I am workign on some units that have some variety in the under clothes though. If you google image samurai and ashigaru uniforms there's plenty to keep you going  :)

And as to finding them daunting, I can certainly appreciate this but once you get stuck in all it takes is a bit of practice  :)

cheers

James
