Playwar Modern Mercs
« on: February 20, 2011, 11:12:31 PM »
Finally got around to finishing these guys:  Mark Evans' PlayWar Modern Mercs.

Some close ups of the better ones:

and the 'Merc patch' on the back of the jacket:

Sadly, I don't think these are available.  Good fun minis.

All based on the fantastic Sulaco bases from Fenris (best bases in the buisness!)

Really awesome Vikey! Love the colors and painting on all of them. They will fit any modern or near future games 8)

Great painting and nice looking figures... but what's going on with the weapons? They look too big and you're in for a bit of a surprise if you brace your weapon with your upper arm and not your shoulder.

Way back when there still was conscription in Belgium, I too did my part   ::)
and since that's the way they tought us to carry our weapon when advancing in the field (moving in tirailleur) I don't see anything wrong with that.

I was thinking more of the figure in OD at the back of the group shot who looks like he's shooting and the one to his left who appears to be firing from the elbow and sighting with his ear, but yes there are a variety of positions in which you could carry a weapon for comfort and some degree of readiness.

Hehe, he is actually firing a Barret 50, aiming with his ear and placing that brick sh*t house of a weapon to his arm, I sense broken bones abound! But ah their minis so they can get of with it!

Very nice paint jobs love the detail especially what you've done on the back of that one troopers jacket.

Thanks everyone....it sure helps staying motivating when you hear all the kind words.

As for the skin recipe Hubba...Actually it's just the set of 3 'dark flesh' sold by Reaper Master paints.  I brought the sleeveless gentlemans skin up a bit brighter using 'tanned flesh shadow', and left the other guys tone a bit darker.

I still haven't figured out how to do a real dark skinned person, without it looking flat.

I don't know, I think you've done one of the best renditions I've seen and I'm sorry I didn't think to mention it originally. Flesh tones are hard to pull off at the best of times with Caucasian figures, let alone any other types. Neither figure looks like Al Jolson, which is the usual result and the shading etc is subtly done.

I am told foundry's new paints do very well for this sort of stuff, I think they released the three tones and looking at how the dad has used them on his stuff they are very, very good. So might be worth checking out. But yeah, I always have issues with skin tones, recently just painted skin a dark brown (often scorched brown from GW stuff) and then painted on some AV medium flesh tone, then went over it with a Citadel Devlan Mud wash and then highlighted some features with Dwarf flesh... But, you still have to hope the paint goes on okey.

And yes the Dark skinned trooper is definitely an accomplishment unto himself, tried darker skin tones earlier on some figs, and it didn't turn out right. So nice going on that one.
