1918 For Runabout re-paint
« on: 25 September 2007, 05:04:03 AM »
Picked up this truck today at a junk shop.

It had three screws holding it together so I took it apart.

Then I stripped the metal parts.

More to follow.

Ok I've got a lot further.  I primed everything but the tires with black Dupli Color Sandable Primer which is currently my primer of choice.  It's super smooth, holds detail, and covers nicely.

A detail shot.

Base colors painted on.

That's all so far.

I stripped it with fingernail polish remover.  Next time I'm just going to try paint stripper although the polish remover got it pretty clean.

Wow! Excellent result. I tried stripping Solido halftracks using NPR but it didn´t have any appreciable effect.

Looking forward to the finished article.

You might try a brass wire brush.  That's what I use to strip metal be they pewter figs of something else.  It took me a few hours to work this stuff down.  I let it sit for about an hour then scrubbed as much as I could then put it back in.  Did that two or three times.

Ok here it is with a dark brown wash.

After the wash I highlighted all the colors with two or three highlights starting with the base color as the first highlight.

As you can see it's mostly done other than the headlights and whatever marking I decide to put on it if any.  I'm considering putting U.S.M.C. on the trunk and a number on the doors but I'm not sure I want to mark these trucks with anything as that would cut down on their flexibility for gameing.  I plan to put the top back on after I finish varnishing so as not to rub the paint off the top of the windshield frame.

Fantastic.  My Cars Model-T has been languishing for a while, but you've accomplished about what I had in mind.  Really neat.

Great job! I wouldn't letter it up, either. You'll get more use out of it this way.

Thanks guys.

One guy on the Reaper forum suggested I should try and find some magnetic buisness card stuff and make up different signs I can put on the sides.  I still need to work up a luggage rack system that I can attach and detach from the vehical as I need to.  I finished the headlights now I've got just a bit of light weathering to do and I can clear coat it and put the top back on.

Most of the magnetic material is rather thick - it would look more like a board hung on the side.

One alternative is to put the USMC on the side and use the magnetic material to affix baggage over it when necessary.  I did this by painting up a round rare earth magnet as a tarp covered spare tire.
