New ShadowSea skirmish game website
« on: 24 February 2011, 07:16:36 PM »
The new ShadowSea website is launching as a beta version but is open to explore.

It requires Flash and takes a little time to load due to the animations, so please be patient. The
miniatures store is functional also, where shoppers can order the official minis
from Cavalcade.

There are plenty more things planned to the site but please let me know how it stands now.

First of the website is very impressive. Indeed it does take quite some time to load, even after the main screen has loaded it often takes quite a while for individual pages to load.

In fact, I love the exploration point and click feeling you introduced, it fits the setting so very well. However as  I said it takes some time to load the info screens of the factions but the site does not show that its loading those info boxes, it might be a good idea to show its still loading something and hasn't frozen up.

Also you might want to make the facebook and blogspot links a bit more obvious, especially the blog since that icon is not particularly well known so people don't tend to click it so much, yet you have some very interesting things up on the blog!

Thanks for the input. There is a bar on the bottom of the page that shows the loading time for the individual pages. I'm curious what your time was for loading and what browser you were using, and if you have flash and which version. I'm going to see if we can make some sort of auto-detect that changes the frame rate of the site does something to adjust the loading time. It only takes a second on my machine for each faction popup, so there may be something going on between browser versions.

The picture you posted here took so long to load that I didn't even try going to your site. Something rum is up.

Ah yes, I never noticed the progression bar because I have to scroll down to see it. My screen resolution is at 1366 x 768 (I know wetter or not scrolling is required often depends on screen size and shape)

Loading time for the main page I cant say as it remembers now, individual factions take about 12-15 seconds to load. For the factions that go to a different background screen (up or down, love that btw) the progression bar does not show up until the background has changed, again giving the impression of a stalled browser/flash.

I am using firefox and my flash is on auto update so I am assuming that's on whatever the newest edition is.

Hope this helps!

The picture looks great but after 60 seconds I had only gotten to 10% of the loading sceen so to be honest gave up  :'(

I'm currently running Windows 7 (64bit) with 8GB of RAM with Firefox 3.6.13 and Flash is 10.2.152.26

I only had this topic open and no other programs running.

Router states 3GBit download speed at the moment and we are not using a lot of bandwith other then me

Thanks for the info. I'm having the programmer look into a few things. It should not take nearly as long to load as some are reporting. There will be a low-bandwitdth version also and just a basic HTML site, but it would be nice to get the Flash parts working on everyone's system.

I just went and downloaded the latest version of Flash to see what's up, and I can't see anything on your site, it's just a black page where nothing else loads up. I left in on for a couple of hours to see if anything happens but no dice, it stays black. Running on FireFox here too, if that info's of any use.

I really have no idea what I'm doing.

It's a server problem apparently. I'm looking into how to mitigate it but the hosting provider has been having issues for the last few days. It works well locally but not globally.

We're in the process of moving to a new server. Here is the test page from the server.

For those that had a problem with the old server, please give this one a try and let me know if it works better. I'm hoping that the old server was the problem.

thanks,

Eric
