Yeesh, I walk away for an hour and this thread goes off the deep end!  ;)

Cruise has put in a few decent performances (rather liked him in The Last Samurai), so that doesn't necessarily worry me.  My concern is the impact of his presence, insofar as every film he's in automatically turns into a Tom Cruise movie, wherein he portrays a larger-than-life individual who is the linchpin of the entire plot.  This doesn't really work in the world of Lovecraft, where the underlying point is the insignificance of humankind in general when faced with the unspeakable horrors of the cosmos.

"Oh god, squamous tentacled horrors are rising from the earth.  We're doomed.... DOOMED!!!  Oh, wait, there's Tom Cruise!  WE'RE SAVED!!"

One sees where this could end very badly.

Still, I put a lot of trust in Guillermo Del Toro.  Not so much in James Cameron though - his involvement actually worries me the most, given he hasn't made a really good film since The Abyss.  Regardless, reserving judgement until I see a trailer.  However, if Cruise shoots Cthulhu's head off with a rocket launcher, I'm just gonna give up on society and go live in the woods...

So he's playing a shoggoth then?

Sounds like Hubbard's works, and I've heard TC is a big fan of them.

I have a lot of faith in Del Toro, that said I really am not a Tom Cruise fan....I mean I find him borderline unwatchable, he just comes off as a little midget basketcase. However Ron Perlman will be in it as well so thats a big plus!
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

A good script will be key to this project as most of the story has precious little dialogue.

This is key, give him a good script and I'm sure he'll perform but I think the success of the film will firmly rest on the script regardless of who they have starring in it.

So purely out of interest what big Hollywood star of today would do the movie justice as main character? (yea I said of today, else we get a bunch of names I am to young to remember)

Anybody who has given a going mad with realization act worth of HPL in the past?

project killed.

(see the update in red)

EDIT: Also, why was everyone so down on Tom Cruise being in it? I would have thought that the important news would have been 'Big Budget, Big Screen Lovecraft Adaption'... which (I think) hasn't really been done since Boris Karloff starred in 'Die, Monster, Die!' If successful, it would have proved that HPL is bankable and opened the door for other filmmakers to adapt HPL stories - maybe starring someone you'd prefer.

I would have thought that just the fact that it was being done would have been good news - it may have interested a lot more people in playing 'Strange Aeons', for one.

So Universal killed Mountains of Madness because they're worried it won't make any money, yet they think some rehash godzilla-esque flick is bank. Ugh.

I'm glad I read the book. It also didn't have Tom Cruise starring.

Yes, it does suck - a lot.

I was really hoping that a 'major' Lovecraft film would wake up a lot of people to HPL (and the rest of the Lovecraft Circle's) Cthulhu mythos. What could have come next - Delta Green-inspired action movies? A 'Lovecraftian' miniseries? 'Cthulhu on the Orient Express'? The interest generated in the Mythos by a major motion picture would have gone a long way to help 'cottage' industries that deal with various types of lovecraft-inspired materials... Like Strange Aeons, like HPLHS' films (Call of Cthulhu, Whisperer in Darkness...) - never mind all the amateur writers who write Lovecraft-inspired fiction that sits in a drawer because nobody will publish it.

Hopefully, it will get made - Tom Cruise, or no. Otherwise, we'll be left with 'The Last Lovecraft', or similar.

What are you worried about with Tom Cruise? I think it's a move of genius. Given his -ahem- diminutive stature it will save millions by making the CGI-generated mountains look twice as tall as they are.

On the other hand, if they go realist, they're contemplating calling it Tiny hillocks of being upset a bit.

I hope Gwynneth Paltrow plays a penguin. I want to hear her Supporting Oscar speech for the performance.

And on the subject of penguins, is Danny de Vito on board with the project? He's played a killer penguin.
It requires less mental effort to condemn than to think - Emma Goldman
