in the end when the main character is chased down an enormous rollercoasteresque avalanche/path on a sledge, chased by some star spawns on snow mobiles.

...

I'd watch it.

EDIT: Also, why was everyone so down on Tom Cruise being in it? I would have thought that the important news would have been 'Big Budget, Big Screen Lovecraft Adaption'... which (I think) hasn't really been done since Boris Karloff starred in 'Die, Monster, Die!' If successful, it would have proved that HPL is bankable and opened the door for other filmmakers to adapt HPL stories - maybe starring someone you'd prefer.

I would have thought that just the fact that it was being done would have been good news - it may have interested a lot more people in playing 'Strange Aeons', for one.

I see your point, but to be honest, it's hard for me to fathom any sort of mainstream appeal of HPL, regardless of the star or the Budget.

To the likes of people like us, sure, but to most folks, it's just poorly written- comic book pulp fare.

Best case scenario is that the film has a minor success, us fanboys are pleased, while the rest of the world forever will think Cthulhu has something to do with Tom Cruise.

Part of the appeal, at least to me, is the fact that it is so under the radar to normal society.  HPL's works are a bit like the forbidden knowledge he so often writes about...We are the 'knowing' Miskatonic Professors, while the public at large is blissfully unaware of the unspeakable horrors that lurk in the small hours of the night.

Part of me is saddened, as it would be very cool to be able to see how it is interpreted, but part of me is glad that I don't need Hollywood's vindication that this is a cool universe to hang out in.  HPL doesn't deserve to be just another Hollywood franchise that is churned out, and then fades away into DVD history.

Agreed.

and it looks like this film will get put on a shelf indefinetly until a studio picks up the pre-production $150 mil price tag and some hot-shot exec figures that this film will make some money.  GdT, TC and JC attached to the project should hopefully guarantee that it gets made, maybe just not for a couple years...

That hasn't stopped plenty of movies from being mainstream successes.

Unfortunately, I don't think this project is anything more than the carrot-and-stick that the studio uses to keep del Toro working on their projects. They've been promising him "you can do it after the next film" for several films now. I doubt it will ever get made, at least while he stays with them.

Guess what...
I have decided to stop worrying about the film that could not be, and instead re-read the novella.

Good night, gentlemen.

Cruise would be a mere snack for the Big C (& who wouldn't pay good money to see Chthulu nibble Off Tom's limbs one by one.... >:D?). BUT if it's made by Hollywood, it will have to have a happy ending - thats not exactly Lovecraft's style is it?

I know little of Lovecraft, aprt from a documentary I once watched but I thinks that's enough to declare this a match made in heaven. Of course I will wait to see if it gets a recommendation from Oprah before I commit.

ANY Cthulhu is good Cthulhu. It's the original X-Files my friends, alien beasties and beings, the truth is out there, secret conspiracies and cabals. All good. And the Mountains of Madness is the inspiration for The Thing and its variants, btw, so this would be fun to see.  However, I think Johnny Depp would make this movie into blockbuster material!!

Here's a fan trailer:

I'm pretty fed up watching Johnny Depp - the guy is so full of himself imo, you can really sense that he knows that he is adored by a bunch of fan boys. I like his acting well enough in a lot of movies, but the frequent Tim Burton movies and the Pirates series really messed him up and he pretty much plays the same character over and over again. I felt like as if I was looking at a Jack Sparrow performance while watching the Public Enemies movie.

Tom Cruise may be a weirdo in his private life, I don't really care about his personal stuff. I think he is a solid actor - Last of the Samurai and Born on the 4th of July comes to mind. I think he could have pulled off being a main character in a movie like this.

I am glad that Guillermo Del Toro dropped this movie when he couldn't enforce his R rating. Let's face it, PG13 movies tend to suck. A Lovecraft movie without the true horror, death, madness and despair would be a complete and utter waste of film. Just read reviews of Battle: Los Angeles which has a PG13 rating and a lot of people think it wanted to pull of being a Black Hawk Down with Aliens but chickened out on the blood and gritty realism.

One thing that put me off from the start was the prospect of this being in 3D, I hate 3D movies. Nothing breaks the immersion of a movie more than looking at your wrist watch or watching a movie in 3D. At least for me, I am aware of watching "a movie" the whole time just because of the silly effects and glasses.....
