Oh dear, there's speedpainting for you... I see now that I forgot to paint the buttons on the shirts of the askaris.
For those of you wondering about the uniform and the term "Tirailleurs Nilois" there is a story behind it, this being a very short retelling.
My maternal grandfather had an old uncle Gustave La Roche Lezignan who served in the infantry as a leutenant in the Franco Prussian War. Afterwards he left France (something to do with him and the wife of his commanding officer, as the rumour went) and spent the next few years in western Sudan. His dream was to expand the French colonial empire to the source of the Nile. He founded the Tirailleurs Nilois in 1878 and led a few expeditions to present day Uganda, mainly to the kingdom of Buganda where his duty was to escort catholic priests to and from the kingdom.
In 1884 he suffered from severe attacks of fever and returned to France where he spent the rest of his days as tradesman until his death in 1932.
The Uniform of his askaris was the same as that of the Tirailleurs Senegalais but with blue tassels on the fez, light blue sash and light blue lining in the cuffs and white putees.
