Oh dear, there's speedpainting for you... I see now that I forgot to paint the buttons on the shirts of the askaris.

For those of you wondering about the uniform and the term "Tirailleurs Nilois" there is a story behind it, this being a very short retelling.
My maternal grandfather had an old uncle Gustave La Roche Lezignan who served in the infantry as a leutenant in the Franco Prussian War. Afterwards he left France (something to do with him and the wife of his commanding officer, as the rumour went) and spent the next few years in western Sudan. His dream was to expand the French colonial empire to the source of the Nile. He founded the Tirailleurs Nilois in 1878 and led a few expeditions to present day Uganda, mainly to the kingdom of Buganda where his duty was to escort catholic priests to and from the kingdom.
In 1884 he suffered from severe attacks of fever and returned to France where he spent the rest of his days as tradesman until his death in 1932.

The Uniform of his askaris was the same as that of the Tirailleurs Senegalais but with blue tassels on the fez, light blue sash and light blue lining in the cuffs and white putees.

For reference to the above story there are notes in:
M. Ensonge: Imaginations del la France vol 4, Dahomey 1898 p.34
and in the Hungarian explorer F. Antasy: My life in the Jungle. Budapest 1901 p.54f.

I am so sorry Driscoles   . When I wrote the first story I forgot to include the fact that its all fiction.

And then I wasn't clear enough about it in the second post.  :(

The write up is all part of my upcoming Darkest Africa Campagin where all the european explorers have almost possible biographies, including the evil doctor van Kopp and his trigger happy sidekick Otto (who might show up later in the competition if i have time to paint them). :)

i am happy that it sounded plausible and also happy that Le matou rouge
clarified the hoax part

Cheers

By the way, Björn.

I love the lady in a yellow dress, there is something delightfully sinister and concentrated about her facial expression teh way you painted her.  8)

Sorry ! I've seen it a long time ago, and I don't remember it very well. In my memory, it's more a love affair than a pure adventure ; But the historical reconstitution should be accurate (I recall it was a big production) and if you're fond of Sophie Marceau...
