NW frontier online resources question
« on: March 19, 2011, 01:06:52 AM »
Hi there

Has anybody seen a good on-line resource for colour plates of tribesmen and opponents of the British in the NW frontier? Does dress change markedly from 1st Afgan war up to the early 1900's? Is there a significance in turban colour etc. Apologies for the basic questions...I'm just starting out in this area!

Cheers!

If you are a member of (or join) the ColonialWars Yahoogroup:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ColonialWars/

There is at least one word doc posted there with info on the variations in dress of the tribes. As far as I know in most cases the colour of turban/sash wasn't relevant, but probably higher status individuals would have richer coloured items. A good way to distinguish leaders of units.

Not that  I have vacuumed the market but  I find that the studies of the histories and customs of the NWF tribes are lacking or at least hard to find.

That appears to be very true. There's a lot of generalisation, but not much specific detail as for example there is with the Zulus or Hadendowah etc.  :(

The anthropologists were probably sent back with their questionaires nailed to their foreheads and the phrenologists with the calipers shoved up their *hrmm-hmm*.
