Dutch Bombard Ketch "Rood Dijk"
« on: 20 March 2011, 06:57:49 AM »
So one more down and four to go before the 13th of May (Kansas City's Border Wars). This ship was what happens when I get side tracked from a larger ship because I had a funny idea for a ship name.

Great model. I love the way you've done the sails and rigging. If the Frigate is this good, we'll be in for a treat  ;D

Heya Wingnut, once again you treat us with a great model. I really enjoy watching them, the uniformity of the appearance of all your boats and ships are very pleasing to the eye.
Thanks for sharing!

Wich reminds me, have you written anything about the making of the sails somewhere? I have been looking, but alas, I am impatient and also lack all skills in looking for things it seems.

Sails Quick run-down:
The sails are made of .005 thickness evergreen polystyrene. The same stuff that model railroaders and scratch builders use. I size them to fit the masts and use various sizes of thin strips of the same material for seams. Sand the sails with fine grain sand paper to get texture. To get the curve of the sails I glue thin flat brass strips to the backs of the sails on each side (right and left not the top). To lash the sails to the yard arms I use a tiny hole punch I found in the "Scrap Booking" section of a local craft store and wax string from the jewelry section. After assembling but before attaching them to the yard arm paint the sails.
Painting the sails is a matter of spray painting it an off-white then washing it with antiquing medium and cheap craft paint. The medium allows you to re-wet the wash the sail to get the stained cloth effect you want. .

What an interesting way of making the sails  8) I would've never guessed they were out of styrene  ???

I assume the brass strip is already bent to the curve before attaching it to the styrene sail?

Great stuff  :-* 8)

(no more pva soaked tissue for me  :) )

cheers

The brass strip can be put on flat before you paint it, then bent. The problem being that it tends to need a touch of glue where it breaks loose. The advantage is it looks more like the seems and less noticeable. If you put it on after the sails are painted it never really matches the color of the sails.
I use CA glue and ZIP-Kicker to speed up the process but be careful not to get it on your fingertips because finger prints on your sails really stand out after staining.

I must say, I was very surprised to read that it was actually styrene sheets. I would have guessed on high quaility linnen cloth, starched and dyed/painted. Hmm, I will emediatly pass this information on to my buddy Kalle hehe. This sounds like his department :)

Once again, thank you for your help and patience.
