Finnish Civil War 1918 - Girls with Guns
« on: March 20, 2011, 07:35:02 AM »
A short but brutal civil war was fought in Finland (January 27, 1918 - May 15, 1918) after the independence from Russia. The "White" side was supported by Swedish volunteers and towards the end of the conflict by the German Baltic Sea Division under von der Goltz. The "Reds" had some Russian volunteers on their side but also a number of companies of females. I am planning to make a small unit of these and would be grateful for any advice on suitable 28mm figures. So far I have only come across a few from Copplestone, Artizan and Foundry. The below period photos may indicate what I am after:

Yes, the use of Mosin Nagants limits the choice somewhat. You probably can get by using some of the Empress SCW female militia types. The later models are shorter than what the would be using in this conflict. Also if you will consider arming your women with contraband  there may be a few partisan types, (Bolt Action and Artizan, I think) with both Mausers and MNs.

Thanks Hammers,

I am not so picky regarding the weapons. I guess they might have been armed with different weapons. I have seen pictures of the male combattants armed with anything from Mausers to hunting rifles, shotguns and even winchesters. The problem seem to be to find heads with appropriate headgear and female features. It might have been easier to portray the 1917 Russian Maria Bochkareva Death Battalion. They didn´t look that female with their shaved heads... ;)

Like Janner I'd suggest a look at Hasslefree as they do a couple of sprues of female heads... no headgear tho.

There are in St. Pitersburg sculptor - Michael Presnukhin. He made 28 mm figure of women's "Battalion of Death" Mary Botchkareva.

He makes the figures for themselves and their friends, sell rare.
Try to write him a letter in this thread in the forum, where I gave you the link. Maybe it will make for you a few casts.

Yashka by Maria Botchkareva Constable 1919. Fought on the Russian front & formed the Women’s Battalion of Death to shame the men into fighting and not deserting. No fan of the Bolsheviks she was executed in 1920.

Interesting project traveller. My mothers grandfather had two brothers who fought on the "white"-side. Both of´em fell in battle.

Hi Traveller.
I wrote a letter to the author shapes the Women's Battalion.
Today he told me. These figures may purchase.
But there is one problem. Since the plans of the sculptor is not included the full realization of his pieces - he's not ready to give bulk discount for me.
Post thumbnail abroad independently, he also refused. He offers to buy me these figures for retail price (about 2,7 USD + mail to Russia), and then send them to you.
As a result, the price will increase substantially. At least twice!
Make a decision. If these figures you need for that kind of money - write.

Those are beautiful figures - full of character - pity they were not more readily available.

I would not want to play the role of intermediary in the transfer of money and figures. Price would be quite acceptable if the sculptor himself selling his pieces. I'm trying to persuade him to accept the money and send their figures independently. Let's see - what would happen.
He has many interesting figures on various topics. Figures quite interesting
