Fishtank scenics for pulps gaming
« on: 23 March 2011, 01:26:44 PM »
I was at the pet store the other day and noticed some fishtank scenics that would work great for a prehistoric lost world setting. They arent cheap, but for a hunnert bucks I could flesh out an entire 4X8 tabletop with the stuff!

Anyone else use this stuff?

I have used a lot of the rock formations. But a year or so ago ago came across some Angkor Wat pieces that made it into my Lost World game.

I've got some rather nice terrarium rocks. Not quite fish-tank, more spider or scorpion tank I suppose, but you get them from the same suppliers.

I've picked up some excellent 'fish tank' ruins of giant heads from Walmart.
One is aztec or mayan and the other is egyptian.
They were nice and big, prepainted and only 7 or 8 bucks each.
Good luck,

You can often find bargains on fishtank terrain at places like Walmart, Petco, Target, etc. While their list prices can be expensive, if you can get them at 50% off or more they become an excellent bargain.

Wonderful stuff.  From Petco and PetSmart I bought a volcano, jungle hut, sunken ship, Egyptian columns (ruins), Egyptian temple room in ruins, numerous Egyptian statues, Buddhist temple ruins, Buddhist statue ruins, Japanese gate, and a Japanese shrine.

Challenge I find is weight. A lot of fish tank stuff is made of fairly heavy material to keep it on the bottom. All this can add up quickly if you are planning on transporting this stuff any distance.

I use a lot of aquarium supplies.

There's a particular rubber backdrop that some aquarists use in their tanks (it's neutral in the water). It makes perfect large river or coastal strips.

I also have a huge submarine wreck that is pulp-perfect and a whole bunch of Buddhist material.

It tends to be cheaper than most dedicated model supplies. I can put up with the extra weight as it tends to be more robust when transporting.

Fish tank rock outcroppings, perfect for 15mm jungle as here, but equally suitable for 28mm. A bit of drybrushing, some added foliage & the caves tidied up.

I use a lot of pet store finds for my terrain. It's great for everything from Fantasy to Future wars & all the stuff in between.

Sinewgrab has a huge Greek temple that is an acquarium piece. I think the Greek and Roman ruins could be good terrain for Pulp encounters, whether above water, or down below with divers looking for Atlantis.

The Hirst Arts' Roman mold (#62) is far more flexible and not that much more than a few good aquarium pieces.
