Aether Ship Flooring?
« on: 31 March 2011, 09:23:17 PM »
What kind of flooring do you think an Aether ship would have?

I'm planning on building a Aether ship for my VSF games. Think Space Hulk with a Victorian twist. I was originally thinking wood for the passenger areas and some sort of grating for the engine rooms. Any suggestion? In those old ironclads the had wood flooring right?

Wood, carpet, and metalwork for engineering.

The Titanic is pretty well documented and would give a good example.
So many projects..... so little time.......

always wood, for airships hard Balsa
metal decks are not a good Idea - slippery when wet
carpets could suck up water and create serious buoyancy problems

I'd go with a light wood flooring and for the frame of the ship I'd go with a wood frame that is covered in iron plates riveted to the wood.

I was thinking or internal locations due to the comment about passenger areas.

I was thinking that you might look at ancient triremes structure. There was minimal walking floor are to keep the weight of the ship as light as possible, the rowers representing the "engines" . So a walk way to get to a gun station with open "deck" area showing the internal area? Just some thoughts over coffee.

I think iron gratings aren't right out; if cut finely enough, they both have texture to keep from slipping, and can be fairly light.

Nasty scrape if you take a tumble on it, though.

For gratings, you can go to the yarn supply section of a craft store, they have plastic sheets punched with zillions of square holes for needle point work and such.

Absolutely! However, these are usually poly plastic, a bit difficult to paint, and can droop if you use large spans and don't support them. Still, I always think of these when considering Space Hulk with 3-D terrain.

Now, if only I could find the styrene grid earring holders I had years ago. Obnoxious pink, but took paint well, and were light and sturdy enough not to bow under the plastic's weight.
