Thats the answer I got many moons ago when I asked and it works for me although I do not have Plaka and use CDA Negro as the base.

CDA?

Th outcome looks like raw liver.

 :o

Anyway, Regulator uses GW Scorched Brown and Highlights with Vallejo Mahogany Brown and then starts adding Ivory or Dark Sand.

Black undercoat. GW Scorched Brown basecoat, and then Vallejo Dark Flesh gradually mixed into the Scorched Brown to create highlights. The ultimate highlights being almost pure Vallejo Dark Flesh, and hardly brown at all - but the eye tricks you like that. That's it - nothing else.

Stonking, Richard. That the greyish tone I am looking for to. Do you remember how many layers of scorched brown/flesh tone you applied?

Literally one layer of neat Scorched Brown over the black undercoat. Then with the second layer, mix in a bit of Dark Flesh and apply the mix to the raised muscles etc. Then mix in a bit more Dark Flesh and highlight a bit more, and so on - it doesn't look it, but I promise you, these Zulus faces, knuckles, fingertips etc are a lot more Dark Flesh than Scorched Brown. Almost pure Dark Flesh on the extremities, with just a tiny bit of Scorched Brown to knock it back...

My - not very PC - insight, is that black skinned people are not really black or brown as 'white' people seem to think of them, just very dark pink! They are basically 'flesh'-toned, not some other colour.

I don't know if that's anthropologically right or not, but it seems to give the desired effect in 28mm  :)

Since I wanted to have a mixture of skin tones for my Askari, I kept some notes for my future painting endeavours. Maybe these could be put into the first post by Hammers should this become a sticky? Should that be the case, I'll remove the info from this post. I've added pictures for the forum where I had examples. More could be added.

Did I miss someone?

I try to keep things simple so my recipe is:
Undercoat of white. Basecoat of valejo earthbrown with a little bit of black in it. Then a coat of earthbrown, and then just highlighting with green ochre. I almost always highlight with green ochre because it gives a more natural feel to it.

I think the secret to black flesh is more layers, 5 or 6, and a pretty light, thinned final highlight.

Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.
