Pumkins for my 28mm scenery?
« on: April 13, 2011, 01:24:40 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know of a manufacturer who produces model pumkins suitable for 28mm? I Want to make some fields of crops for my 28mm Darkest Africa, and fancy adding some pumkins.

Thanks for any help, Marc.

These look nice:

and you can get them as a patch also:

pretty expensive though if you need a lot of them.

I made several dozen loose pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns out of orange, green, and yellow polymer clay mixed together (just enough to blend the colors but still keep them somewhat distinct) for a halloween game our club did awhile ago. After I baked them I just used grape stems trimmed short to serve as pumpkin stems. I really didn't take me long at all, and maybe put me back 12$ for the clay. If you were going to make a full growing patch, you could probably still use grape stems, just spray them green, keep them all connected, and add a few leaves here and there from broad leaf aquarium plants. Glue your clay pumpkins on after they are baked and I expect you'd have a lovely simple patch.

Reaper makes some that come in a Jack O'Lantern pack.  Four Jack O'Lanterns and three pumpkins.  I thought they made a pack of pumpkins but I couldn't find it.  You can buy the pumpkins seperatly from the Jack O'Lanterns directly from Reaper.  Look below the picture under the heading Bonyard.

They also have an article on how to make them out of acorns.

Check out the ones made by Busch... They are quite good and if I remember correctly, not that expensive either.

Thanks all.
Remington i have been lookiing at the Busch pumkins, do you think HO scale would work ok for 28mm? I'm still pretty new to the hobby and not really that up on scales!

The links for the other pumkins look nice too.

Well, they are slightly smaller than they should be, but a friend built a pumpkin patch with them and they looked great and the size was no problem whatsoever... The ferns and mushrooms also look great, although the ferns are a bit fiddly.

I bought a big pack of pumpkins from a swedish model railway company. The pumpkins look really good, I think, and are quiet cheap(ish). Here: http://www.modellhobby.se/index.php?maincat=1&cat=1623&entity=10413

Not sure if they ship abroud, though...

Gona go with Busch, lots of pumkins for your money there.
Although pumkins can grow huge in africa as well as in other countries, a picture I saw recently showed an African farmer tending pumkins and his crop was'nt that big, so if Busch's are slightly smaller I don't think it matters.

Well, I wish I could have pictures to show you. I hope you won't regret it. The size perception is always so subjective.

Those are the Busch pumpkins but thanks for the link. I've had a hard time finding a good store in Sweden that sells Busch's products.

You might find something useful at Lemax in their Spooky Town Range.

https://www.lemax-spookytown.com/shoppingcart/Default.asp?CategoryID=11#

Department 56 may also have some, but more expensive.

They can be ordered direct or found seasonally in stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby.

The size would depend how long they've been growing - smaller/underscale ones aren't fully ripened yet ? Or a different variety ?

You might also find some plastic beads - craft shops are a good source but can be expensive - charity shops can be cheaper (look in children's area, also a possible source of cheap plastic plants and animals), or sometimes pound shops, seaside gift shops etc.

actually i think that here in europe there is a tree (maybe a bush) who makes really nice fruits exactely looking like a pumpkin, but 1 cm tall!

of course you have to make a mould , but believe me, those are perfect!

the only problem is that i don't know the name of the species and i even don't know when they grow! (i think autumn)
