"Kroot" almost sounds Dutch.
Eh eh. It certainly does not sound French.

In the late 19thC (=VSF period) the French did not like foreign-looking words and often changed the spellings of foreign words to give them some kind of French spelling.

I imagine that this name would probably be changed to: "Croûtes"  lol

And in a colonial context, it is sad but true that racist nicknames  :'( were often invented for conquered people, so I suppose that these aliens would have been called "Crottes" or "Croûtons"!  lol

There used to be one on the old-style LF site, but I think I broke it through over-use  :(

Inspiring conversions all.

French, Dutch, Martian, Venusian, I can't decide which I like best, though "Kroot" almost sounds Dutch.

Well, kroot IS a word in Dutch, meaning red beets, though I've never heard it used in that context. But locally we use it as a synonim for pinecones, but that is Dutch Brabants dialect, and as far as I know only in my area ( Asten - Deurne - East of the Peel area anyway). Some squirrel fluffed cones do resemble a Kroots "hairstyle", funny enough.

Hmm, now I wan't to make a few Kroot with Dutch and Brabant flags somewhere. And I'm not even into 28mm!!  >:(

While not Kroots, my Lizard Askari recently completed an arms deal with the Kroot (literally).

GW fantasy skinks with Kroot arms & severly chopped down rifles.  I like the stubbiness of the guns making them look like shotguns.  I figured shotguns would be pretty good weapons for off-world askari not familiar with Earth technology.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to try this.
Here's my Kroot armed Skinks for pulp...

As for the kroot bodies, I put dark elf spear arms on the remaining kroot bodies to make fantasy Krorks, but not playing fantasy at the moment, haven't painted them up yet.

Thanks Wayswatcher for this scientific etymology explanation: so, if I understand well, amongst the first explorers on this planet there were some Dutch/Flemish guys and when they met these creatures it reminded them of pinecones or of red beets (perhaps because of hairstyle). Hence the name "Kroots".
Better than any GW invention! I like fantasy when it looks historical.

@Black Cavalier

Are the skink arms compatible with the Kroots?

I appreciate you went the other direction, but I've always wanted to de-gun my Kroots, and the way they're carrying their guns makes it difficult (to my brain anyway) to see a way to replace the gun with sword/axe etc (the way the wrist is angled means it always looks like they're holding a gun)

If skink arms would work without too much modification, that would give me another route to consider.

Thanks

@zemjw

Don't know how the skink arms would work on kroots.  I bought the skink bodies & kroot arms separately off ebay, so don't have left overs to try it out.

I think the Kroot would look a little T-Rex ish with skink arms. I've got a bunch of both and I'll try and put a comparison together tonight. Saurian or Orc arms might work better.

so many fun kroot in here!

I have a soft-spot for the green men of barsoom, so those might be the most compelling for me.

as for kroot with sknik arms- they'd be a bit small & thin.  kroot do work well with lizardmen arms.  I made a blood bowl team that way once:
