Encounter at Casa Rawnsla
« on: April 21, 2011, 07:49:28 PM »
Last night at OHQ we had another Spanish Civil War set to using Triumph and Tragedy rules, both sides entered the table from turn one based on the unit order system used in the rules. The Nationalist forces were stronger in figures but lacked any automatic weapons, which with my usual dice throwing was probably no real disadvantage. The Carlist units using the fast move order, quickly seized Casa Rawnsla but did not have time to fully take advantage of the cover provided due to the timely arrival of two Republican International Brigade units, a prolonged firefight ensued but with the arrival of an Anarchist unit and poor marksmanship from the Carlist Militia units the tide turned against the Nationalists. Meanwhile on the right flank the poor quality local Falangist militia sat safely behind a wall taking shots at the advancing Anarchist militia, giving covering fire to the Legion unit attempting to turn the flank. Legion v Militia you would think a one sided contest and yes it was, but this is me of course. With the Carlists all but decimated on the left and the loss of the Legion on the right a win for Dave and the the Republican force was recorded. I am not sure if we were playing the rules correctly but it did seem that rather than retreat units would if they passed the required morale test would continue to stand and take the punishment, or perhaps it was just how the dice fell. Here is a little photo montage from the game, sorry if they are a little fuzzy but they are in action shots after all :~)

Thanks for comments.

The bushels are from Hovels if I remember correctly.

Flags are Adolfo Ramos available form North Star.

Thanks for the reply - had a nagging feeling I'd seen that corn before!

I'd assumed that as Phil hadn't posted 'I won one!' in 24pt bold type, the victory was yours.  ;)

Very nice read. Good pictures. Thank you for sharing.

Can you please explain the rule problem to me. Maybe I can clear things up.

Cheers

Hi Björn thanks for the comments.

With regards the rules not really a problem as such, having read it again the sentence doesn't really make clear my thoughts.

Let me try to make them a little clearer if I can.  One of my Carlist units in Casa Rawnsla had suppression higher than the men remaining so checked its morale, it failed so became pinned. Now if I do not play a recover order it will remained pinned and can stay where it is, OK it can't fire but it can and did remain in its position in Casa Rawnsla, obliging Dave to fire at it again and again ad infinnum until destroyed or charge it as the only way to remove it, as unless I play and fail a recover order it will never run away, OK there are lots of instances where troops fight to the last man but it seems this can always happen in T & T or have I missed something?

Thanks for the kind comment.

I think the SCW range is pretty much complete, apart from artillery perhaps. Do you have plans for any additions in the near future?

Don't say that! They won't make any more  :o

Joking apart, as extensive as the range is, there's still lots of room for expanding it even further.  :)

Phil,

let me see if I get this right... Your unit is under fire and pinned and you want to keep them in this situation because you want to draw fire on this unit for tactical reasons...

This is a very interesting situation that never occurred during the last 4 years of T&T ( well ...while I played it with my mates ) !

Usually everybody tried to rally his troops and get out the the line of fire. Isnt it better to have a unit in a position that is fully recovered  ? Isnt such a unit not a greater thread to your opponent ?

As far as I understand you played the rules right. You are pinned and have the option to recover or move 3" - not closer to the enemy. You decide not to recover. So you move. If you can not move towards the enemy you can move left or right or backwards. To prevent such a situation I should have written "full 3" AWAY from the enemy"

Is that correct ?

I personally like such situations and rules shouldnt restrict players to do so. If you want to stay there because your men are in a very nervous condition why not  :)

Anyway... once again...the game looks very nice, the miniatures look great. I also paint my SCW minis consistently... unfortunately  I play not very often SCW. :(

Cheers
Björn
