Late German uniform II WW color
« on: 28 April 2011, 02:00:09 PM »
Hi,
please, someone would be so kind to tell me what color Humbrol and/or Valleyo I could use to replicate on my 28 mm Warlord minies the green color of the late German uniforms in use since 1944, which I read it was indicated with the name of "sage green"?
Many thanks,
bye,

Heya

If you would tell me what kind of green uniforms you are refering to. The only green german uniforms are the summer reed-green special motor uniforms (SP guns and the like).

If you are refering to the cammo, there are several types of coulour that you can use, but I still need to know what part or what cammo type.

I cant think of any green uniforms, only field gray. I think most paint makers have special field gray in their sortiments.

I had read in some book that since 1944 the German army adopted a new green uniform, with the collar of the jacket open.

I have studied the subject of german uniforms for the larger part of my life, and I must confess that I havent read about any german uniforms that where new in 1944, coloured green and widely issued.
However, in 1944 there where new uniform types under development, and some where issued, especially to the SS. The later versions of the uniforms where still in the same type of field grey colour. The only thing I can think of, is the 44 type of short uniform, and I am sure that Warlords havent made any miniatures with that.

I would go for field grey pants and if the jacket is the standard M42-M43 I would go for field grey for that as well. What you could do is to have cammo jackets along with field grey pants, and or reverse, or full cammo uniform. That is, obviously, a totally different subject though.

The open collar is especially common on late war pictures of SS troops, using the collar folded back on their M43 uniform jackets. This was not a special feature, just the collar opend and folded.

Many thanks for the info.
I have to try the book where I found the information. Indeed, I doubt arose that the color  be cited may be the "reed green" instead of "sage green" as I have previously written.
If I find the book will give you more information.
From what I remember, the new "green" had replaced the gray-green (field grey).

I would go with the "reed green" and dismiss the rest as inaccuracy

I certainly don't claim to be an expert....but for what its worth...I do mine in a Grey/green tunic with grey pants...I know there was a wide range of "grey" in use by the end of the war so I figure mine can't be completely wrong... ;D plus I based my color on the Vallejo Panzer Aces color "Feldgrau II" so good enough for me.  here is a photo....they were my LPL round 2 entry.

Cheers,

Try to find that book, and I will try to help you as much as I can. I have quite a lot of litterature on the subject and I hope we can work it out.

The summer uniforms where made in the so called reed-green colour and all others where made in field grey, at least as far as I know.

Check out the Vallejo panzer aces range, thery have two colours for Field grey in that range one is the usual the other is green  :D

Early german uniform tunics (M35 and the like) where field grey with bottle green collars, the pants where in a stone grey (Steingrau) colour. Basically, at least when it comes to painting, the same goes for both Heer and SS, the differences are not that great that they can be noticed really in 28mm scale.
SS had many Heer uniforms and details at this time due to various distribution issues. Noticable is that the SS used field grey collars, but... yes as you can guess, a lot of the bottle green versions where issued to the SS, not to mention that a lot had their collars changed to the army version for looks, or as a hommage to their earlier service in the army proper. Personally I would not hesitate to mix the collars and uniforms at all.
In later versions of this uniform, wich was once again the same for SS when it comes to colour, the uniform pants changed to the ever present field grey, and what ever the Vallejo panzer aces range are called or claim, this is an undisputable fact :-P
I am not totally aware of the field grey II colour and will have to check it out, and will try to do that tomorrow.

Later on in the war, a version of the special black motor uniform (panzer etc uniform) was created in reed-green for summer use and for self propelled artillery crews (and for other special motorized personel use), the same is true for the field uniform.

Even the very late, and sparsly issued M44 uniform was made in field grey (privatly tailored versions exist in other materials and colour tones). This is not to be confused with the Dot44 SS camo uniform, wich of course is a full chapter on its own.

If I where you, I would go for field grey (wich is a greenish grey colour), perhaps mixed with camo and or slightly washed with brown washes or something if you want variations. Its almost allways totally proper.
