Scots Mercenaries (Perry)
« on: 30 April 2011, 06:44:52 PM »
Well, I haven't been idle while everyone else has been painting furiously for the Lead Painters League  ;)

I've been working on four new units for my Wars of the Roses forces - and here's the first of them complete: A company of Scots mercenary pike.

Built from the 'European Infantry 1450 - 1500' box, with a few bits from the original Wars of The Roses box thrown in. And the Man-at-arms with the hammer is from one of the metal packs.

Enjoy  :)

And on the field of Mars...

So that's Scots and Flemish mercenaries done...
Next up, Milanese Condottieri... They're proving to be a lot of fun  :smt001

Stunning. I take my hat off to you sir, you are one the few painters I have seen who can actually paint Perry figures to that standard.

Lovely as always, Cap'!  :-*

You'll have to pardon my benighted ignorance when it comes to historical topics, but do they have any particular features that distinguish them as Scots?

Absolutely!

My understanding is that Scots armies looked basically the same (remote highlander-types excepted) as any other armed man in the UK at the time. The Cap's figures all have that fabulously executed blue and white saltire of St Andrew (the Scottish flag) as an identifier, though!  ;)

Fantastic! I'm soooo glad your not in the LPL. That basing is great. Is that just a display base you've got them on?

P.s. I couldn't spot any bottles of Irn-bru in the pockets or any deep fried mars bars anywhere!!!!! ;)

Not many differences between soldiers of North-West Europe (France included), actually. Except the national cross in use for this period :white saltire on blue for Scotland, red cross on white for England, white cross for France, red saltire for Burgundy...
...or a black cross for Brittany, thank you  :)

Wonderful work. Even if they don't wear a black cross  ;)

Thanks all  :)

Plus they're carrying pikes - the Scots 'schiltron' was well known pike formation in the late Middle Ages.

But apart from that, I admit they could be pretty much anybody  ;)

I was going to do them as a bit more of a ragbag, but somehow this rather smart beige and claret livery kind of emerged as I went along  ::)
