At Hobs Hill, 1645 (update 29 Jan)
« on: May 01, 2011, 06:24:18 PM »
“There were strange occurrences at the village of Hobs Hill in 1645.  Indeed, if we are to believe the antiquaries, there were strange occurrences at Hobs Hill in many of the countless years since men first settled there and built that enigmatic mound or barrow known locally as ‘Hob’s Nob’.  Even so, it is the events of that most tumultuous year of the Great Rebellion which concern us here.”
(From notes towards A History of the County of Norshire, found among the effects of Dr Peregrine Monkshead after his untimely death in 1837)

Most of the following minis were intended to be entries for LPL5, which is why they tend to come in batches of five, but my recurrent connection problems put paid to that idea.  This was probably for the best, as it gave me time to finish my Doctor Who 2010 project before the 2011 series began.

But first, some Perry Dragoons painted long ago.  Nice minis, but a bit fiddly to paint compared with their older sculpts for Foundry.

And now, the first of our dramatis personae:

Mr Agamemnon Mandeville, master of Foxglove Hall
Mistress Esther Mandeville, his wife
Sarah, her maid

“Old Jim” Jimson, father to Sarah
Mother Jimson, wife to Old Jim

Looking very nice, I particularly like the master and his wife. :)

Very nice Steve. That's the way to do it  ;)
Character and storytelling with great miniatures.
What make are the locals?

Thanks, chaps.  The Mandevilles and Jimsons are all from the old Foundry ECW range (bought as singles, long ago, and sitting neglected in the lead mountain until recently).

To continue …

Old Master Kane, who surprises his neighbours by being so active at his great age, and would surprise them further if they knew how much greater his age actually is, and what activities he undertakes

The-Worm-Shall-Feed-Sweetly-On-Him Brown, whose Christian name was disclosed to his Godly father by opening the Good Book at random and following the guidance the Lord gave to his pin (Job chapter 24, verse 20)

Mistress Grace a’Bounding, thought by her friends to be a Judith, by her enemies a Jezebel

Ulysses Mandeville, much-travelled younger brother of  Mr Agamemnon

The Pale Rider, whose true name is not known, nor yet is his purpose

Definitely a Jezebel!  lol

Hasslefree conversion? Lovely figures and I can't wait to see them in a battle report  :D

After a brief interlude ...

Soldiers quartered on the village.

Left to right: Charlie Spufford, Isaac "Eyeball" Brown, "Guinea Bob" Stoker.

Ned Wallace, "Stinky Joe" Milburn, Isaiah Redcliffe.

And their happy hosts.

Colin Cowbane isn't letting you in.
Joseph Thornapple was doing very nicely, thank you.
Eb Pokeweed wants you off his land.

Old Ezra Cowbane has worked hard all his life.
Davey Gympie is sure it must be buried here somewhere.

Who makes the "Ulysses Mandeville" mini?

He's another old Foundry figure.  I was lucky enough to get most of the minis I want from that Perry-sculpted treasure trove back when they could be bought as singles.

Thanks for the kind words, all.

Nice work Steve, really like seeing some of these older minis again after so many years and love the backgrounds that you give them.
