Midget Submarines at Diego Suarez, Madagascar
« on: 02 May 2011, 08:04:08 AM »
Gidday!

Whilst reading the diary of Admiral Matome Ugaki 1941-1945 I came upon an entry about midget submarines operating in Sydney Australia (no suprise there!) and to my utter suprise, Madagascar!

So naturally, I searched the web looking for some sites that would expand upon the diary entry. If you do your own web search you will find a number of sites, however, the one listed below is quite good:

http://www.combinedfleet.com/Madagascar.htm

Since there has been in the past a number of topics concerning the island I thought that this topic would capture the spirit. It means that you could if you wish have a skirmish with the Japanese sailors and the British. The mission of the Japanese sailors are to avoid capture and meet up with their mother boat!

Thanks for reading.

Helen
Best wishes,
Helen

Yes, I read about it just recently. The motive behind the whole operation was the fear that the Japanese would use Madagascar as a bse if the Allied did not capture the island.

One of the midget subs was sunk, I believe but the small crew went ashore and was killed in a shoot out with Royal Marines of the invasion force.
