Vietnam Project
« on: May 03, 2011, 05:25:31 PM »
Now that the Battlefield project is done, i've added a new terrain project to my list.

 :D

This is the sort of thing I have in mind at the moment (apologies for the rubbish doodle, but I knocked this up, on my ipad, by hand....erm...actually, by finger) :

12 x 2' square boards

The top of the L, with the bridge, will be significiantly higher terrain, with a steep, windy road (meaning that convoys need to slow down), with stepped paddyfields down the side of the hill.

Two villages (one by the river, with a jetty, in white), a temple (T) on a hill, as a useful point for VC mortar spotters, a convent (C), and a small US firebase (F)....oh, and Suzi Q's Bar (S).

Have probably overdone the jungle - some of it will just be scattered trees, rather than dense ground cover, but that is the rough plan for now - 've already redrawn it 3 or 4 times, so don't expect it to look anything like this, by the time its finished.

Bits of it have been influenced by the Battlefield:Vietnam game, but unlike, with the Arica Harbor table, i'm not planning on a copy of any particular map, rather it will be influenced by some of my favourite bits (eg the stepped paddyfields from "Vantage Point", the bridges in "Operation Hastings", the low lying ditches in "Phu bai" etc etc.

I'm also toying with making some elements, such as the firebase, "destroyable" as per the Arica Harbor map, by having a plain/bunker/destroyed version.

....and this is what i got done this weekend:

As it stands, this project will be 50% bigger than the Battlefield one (with 12 x 2' squares, rather than 8), but hopefully quicker to build, and maybe even cheaper (as i've got plenty of off cuts left over).

Board 1 - the Bridge

Inspiration for this was from Hamburger Hill (the scene with the caravan being towed over the bridge), and from the Operation Hastings map on BFBC2 Vietnam.

Still clearly a WIP - only started it on Saturday afternoon - should be able to fit a River Monitor between the bridge spans...

Truck is a 1/56th FOA resin truck, for scale purposes.

Board 2 - Stepped Paddyfields

Inspiration for this is mainly from Vantage Point map on BFBC2:Vietnam, but also photos like this:

Still a WIP clearly, need to build up the sides of the stepped paddyfields etc etc

The road section is intentionally steep, and windy, so that vulnerable convoys will have to slow down on the bends.

The two boards together:

FOA 1/56th Truck and FOA 28mm Mini for scale purposes.

Board 3 - Village with Paddyfields (WIP)

Another ville, this time, with the more "traditional" style of paddyfield:

Looking forward to seeing your work on this one (from the internet in Australia).  Are you planning to use it at the next Salute?

How are you going to store the terrain?

Happy Gaming,

You don't take any prisoners do you.
You are fairly battering on with this project.
Do you have a deadline?

hmm....I wasn't planning to - if i did, i'd probably need a van, as its 50% bigger than the Battlefield table.  Tempting, but then i'd like to see a bit more of the show next year.

re: storage - I always have one project on table (in this case the Vietnam WIP), but can store 3 more projects under the table - part of the reason I use 2' boards is that they fit underneath the table.  So currently i've got the Battlefield Boards, the Hasslefree board, and the start of my aliens project under there.  The ten foot long aircraft carrier is sadly looking for a new home, but i'm tempted to build another ship at some point.  That will have to wait though, as i've also got a Galactica project about to start bubbling.....which will leave me with quandry re:storage.

When we moved, the new house didn't have a garage, so we added one.  Then I pointed out to the missus that we just filled it full of junk, so I hired a skip, got rid of the junk, and moved my stuff in.... sneaky!

No deadline - this is purely for fun.

Realistically though, I want to progress it pretty rapidly because I also want to get on with my Galactica/Aliens Projects.

Great stuff, Akky!
Look forward to this project, as well :)

And I assume the rules will be named "V Ar:Se"...

hmmm....hadn't given it that much thought yet.....

Given the use of radios (for calling in arty, airstrikes, and medevacs) is such a feature, I might call them "Alpha Romeo:Sierra Echo.....(Over)"......
