It is about the 1938 massacre of Chinese civilians and soldiers and mass rape of women by the Japanese as the capital of the Chinese republic was sacked. I had only read about this briefly in a Time Life book but never fully understood the magnitude and modern day implications of this horrible event. Sometimes one feels just too Euro-centric than what is good for oneself...

Not sure I can stomach that. My great uncle was in China with the army at the time and saw some pretty horrendous things done by the Japanese. He was lucky in his time being up before WW2 broke out and being back in Wales before he was recalled to a new batallion of the SWB and missed still being out east.

It certainly is like watching a film about the Holocaust. The worst bit is, IMO, exactly this. Still living, former Japanese rank 'n filers recounting their deeds. Old men talking about rape, murder and torture they've taken part in. To hear them say it is just mind made me ask in an inner voice: ' So how come you are not dangling in the gallows?'. Still, I think the film gives a bit of perspective... Watch it and perhaps you'll see it.

Possibly my favourite Doctor Who adventure of all time. Well maybe, maybe not. It's up there, though. Certainly a contender.



One of the more (deliberately) comedic storylines, not really surprising given that Douglas Adams wrote the script. That didn't stop old Scaroth and his Cthulhu monster face scaring the shit out of me as a little nipper, though.

From personal experience I have come to find it inadvisable to re-watch old films and shows which  used to thrill/scare/amuse oneself to pieces as one was a wee thing. Myself I find myself almost invariably disappointed.

That is very true. But not in this case, trust me. Tom Baker's time as the Doctor holds me in the same thrall now as it did when I was a child.

I watched Rango last night... Lovely little film that was far more adult that the "Family flick" tag made it appear to be. And it includes an appearance of the Man with No Name... so how could I resist.

I picked up a French film about the Resistance in WWII at Poundland today -- I didn't know if it would be any good, but I figured for £1, how could I go wrong? I enjoyed it a lot -- a very thoughtful, nuanced portrayal that avoids mythologising either side. Definitely a quid well spent.

I just watched Lebanon, the Israeli film about a tank in the 1982 war. Biggest pile of shit I've seen in years, a complete waste of time. The tagline should have been 'no war movie cliche left behind'.
