Quote from: "Paul Hicks"
On Tuesday I took the wife to see this film

http://imdb.com/title/tt0813547/

It's based on a group of Jewish counterfeiters in a camp during the war. They are made to make the perfect Pound and dollar notes to undermine the British and American economies. The thing is you start hoping they get it right, thus helping the Nazis win the war.

Very good indeed,

Paul

Looking forward to that one.

A 4 hour documentary on the Spanish Civil War. A lot of new material apparently.

Rented this from my local library.  Hutton does a fantastic job as Archie Goodwin.

Yeah, those Nero Wolfe things are always worth watching. They are often shown on Saturday afternoons here.

I've been home from work several days now, bed bound with something which feels like the plague. The one good thing about it is that you are allowed to sooth your fever ridden body with lots and lots of DVDs. Todays screening, the 1984 tv production of Kim:

"If it's got Wolseley helmets in it it must be good."

For once, I can post in this thread.

Got this one today, for 5.99€:

http://www.cineol.net/mostrarimagen.php?tipo=1&id=11473

Original Italian title is "Apocalisse sul Fiume Giallo", German DVD release title (an almost literal, AFAIK) "Hölle am Gelben Fluss", US and UK release titles where "Dam on the Yellow River" and "Last Train to Shanghai".

Basically, in 1949, Chinese Communist Guerillas plot to blow up a dam on the Yellow River, thus "causing the death of millions of people" (seriously, that´s the ONLY reason given... alright, the Communist ringleader wants his name to get known all over the world, but still, sounds pretty stupid). Now, while the premise is... you know, the rest of the flick is actually rather decent. Starring Georges Marchal and Anita Ekberg and some passable side characters, the story revolves about a down-trodden American reporter who gets caught between the "story of his life" and a blonde, philantropic love interest.

Good equipment (possibly American leftovers rented out by the Italian army, there´s a lot of Jeeps, 105mm howitzers, some trucks and all that stuff), good photography, average dubbing (no original language track on the DVD), and some passable action scenes.

None too bad. 6 Euros is a bit much, but if you find it for less than 5 Euros/Dollars, give it a try. Great BoB potential with some twisting of the setting.

Also bought "Johnny Mnemonic" for 5€. And since we know it´s a decent movie, no need to dwell on it.

Did you see a special Germans-only version or something then?

The yellow river one sounds like fun though. Nice find.

I recently got my hands on 9th Company, Days of Glory, Saints and Soldiers, and True Grit. All in the Woolworths sale for less than a fiver each (sometimes a lot less). All British LAF members should check it out now while stocks last.

Go on, quick! I'll time you!

Also bought SuperFly for two quid. I feel bad for mocking Chris now.

Really? Why the bad rap? Alright, I *might* just be a little biased because of my Shadowrun past, and I admit that the acting is quite... ah... subdued. Yes, I think that sounds fitting. But the design and SFX are pretty nifty, and it´s good inspiration for Street Violence.

And hey, it´s got Takeshi Kitano as a Yak´za kingpin! Frickin´a! Must be an age thing, I´m sure. ;)

I remember really enjoying the original story of 'Johnny Mnemonic' when I was dead mad on Cyberpunk and all that rot.

But I've never seen the film, or at least I don't remember ever seeing it. Everybody told me it was really bad, so I avoided it to stop it messing with my pleasant memories of the short story (I think it was a short story. Was it a novel? I can't even remember that).

Granted, if you took the walking plank that is Keanu Reeves out of the picture, Johnny Mnemonic isn't actually that bad. And it has possibly the best role of Dolph Lundgren's "career". And a talking dolphin.

So yeah, I guess I shouldn't take the mick. I just can't stand Reeves in anything other than Bill & Ted movies.

Again, that's more of a confession than a condemnation, really isn't it?

Bugger.

Gone all Frenchified this week. Not exactly wargamer pictures really, but I hope nobody minds.

Actually, I suppose they are wargamery, in a Rattrap kind of way.  :)

I can hear the cool jazz and smell the gauloise from here...

Nice choices. I've had them recommended to me several times, but never actually got round to watching them.
