It's been a good couple of weeks for movies in my household.

For back of beyond fans:  The White Warrior, starring Steve Reeves as Hadji Murad, a Caucasian resisting the infiltration of Tsarist colonisers into his homeland:

Tough to beat this one for VSF goodness.  The Vulgarian army is great inspiration for Zenda or Ruritania style of soldiers, there's a great looking Zeppelin, and of course Chitty Chitty Bang Bang herself.  There's even wargaming! (the two old guys even play with toy soldiers at the end of the movie)

And now I am working my way through the Adventure of Young Indiana Jones (Vol 2).  I started with Vol2 because they are set in the war years.  I was pleased to see that Indy served in the Belgian army, allowing the war to be presented from a point of view seldom seen by English-speaking audiences.  The presentation is fantastic.  The set includes 9 disks.  Each disk has a movie of approximately 90 minutes length, followed by a series of documentaries covering subjects from the movie.  The adventures are great fun, and in the great tradition of pulp adventure, they don't allow the facts to stand in the way of a good story.

I've seen the first four disks so far, and have seen Indy at Verdun and in Africa.  He's met some famous people (including Pétain, Nivelle, de Gaulle, Selous, Meinertzhagen and Albert Schweizer, among others), and even kidnapped von Lettow-Vorbeck (only briefly, though - von Lettow was far to wily for even Indiana Jones to hold captive).

Regards

Will

Oh Chitty, You Chitty,
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang,
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
We love you.

I love that film. Apart from "Lollipops! Lollipops!" That bit still terrifies me. More so than any horror film I ever saw. They really shouldn't class it as a kid's picture!  :)

Picked this up real cheap the other day:

Was inspired to get it after playing "Kane and Lynch" in two-player co-op mode with my nephew.

I enjoyed it much more this time than first time around, no idea why. I found it a bit boring back then, but really like it now.

I think its my favourite shoot out in any movie, the sound of the gunfire is terrific, especially when its played loud through surrondsound :)
Am I the only person that wants Robert De Niro to escape at the end? I always feel a bit sad when he dies (sorry for the plot spoiler if anyone hasn't seen it!)

With Heat, Michael Mann made one mistake - he should have shot it two times, a second version with De Niro and Pacino swapping characters. Of course no producer would have paid for that, but imagine...

I got Porco Rosso last weekend, watched it tuesday evening. I must admit I'm a little bit... disappointed would be to hard a word, as it's a nice little movie, but you can't compare it to Castle in the Sky or even Kikis delivery service.

Miyazaki is one of those directors where it's entirely possible to like some of his movies and be left indifferent by others. I like Princess Monononoke and Porco Rosso, but was fairly indifferent to Nausicaa and Howl's Moving Castle. Though in those last two cases there were some cool toys on the screen.

I think the idea of having De Niro and Pacino switching characters would have made an excellent second Heat.

Everyone has their own idea of what the best Ghibli film is. I used to think Laputa was the best of the lot, but now I'm starting to feel it's one of Miyazaki's weaker movies (perhaps I've just gone long enough without watching it to remember the magic). Nausicaa only seems good if you haven't read the manga (the movie only covers the beginning of the story). I think Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso are two of the very best.

Yes, at the time I felt quite angry, and thought De Niro not making it was a cop-out, having to have a 'traditional' ending that punishes the bad guys.

But thinking about it, it makes total sense dramatically. He failed to follow his own rules, and the luxury of going back to take revenge on the beardy guy was the one real slip-up he made, which had to be paid for.

Actually, I think De Niro and Pacino should have walked off into the sunset hand-in-hand at the end. They were the two characters that had most in common with each other.

I just love the bit when Ashley Judd, despite everything he has put her through, saves her man, after you assume she will betray him. That is definitely my favourite scene.

Yep he should have boarded the plane to New Zealand with the pretty dark curly haired girl instead of going back.
I agree about Ashley Judd saving Val Klmer, but she should have shopped him for wearing that ridiculous pony tail

My wife and I watched the Reilly series based on the recomendations of this forum. When it was over she commented that it was strange to see a spy movie where someone was actually spying.

If you liked "Pan's Labyrinth" I can very much recommend this flick:

It takes less place in the world of the fantastic (like Hellboy and Pan's) but is thoroughly within that Spanish SCW horror Del Toro seems to have coined.

The shoot out scene in Heat was directed by non other than Andy McNab. Have to say Micheal Mann is my favorite director of al time.

I've been at home due to the utterly misserable effects of a tummy bug. The wife and I really should have invested in that vomatorium we were perusing at Bauhaus.

Anyway, if anything good can be said about my situation it is that I can do little but watch a lot of movies, for instance this one:

A good watch and an excellent introduction to the Maori wars. A beautiful setting to, ofcourse, it being filmed in Eden on earth.
