Once upon a time in the west.

Actually I was always more on the "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" side (still my favourite western) but watching "Once upon a time in the west" today made me realize that it is actually a fantastic movie. And of course there's Claudia Cardenale in there... shwiiiing!

Taras Bulba. First release on DVD (with Greek subtitles).

I remember when I was in Cologne mid 70's it was running on the same cinema for 10 years continuously, always crowd waiting to see it!

Wow, argsilverson, I missed something there. Never even heard of that movie.

Well, I live under a rock when it comes to anything wild-westish, anyhow so it's not much of a surprise there.

Always liked 'Once Upon a Time...'  Great music, amazing cast (love the opening bit with Woody Strode and Jack Elam), nice cinematography.  Seems to be an under-appreciated film.  Interesting to see Henry Fonda as a really rotten creep, though.  As for Claudia... :-*

Finally got round to watching The Way Ahead at the weekend:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037449/

Came as part of the War Movies box set from the Daily Mail a few months ago as previously discussed on here.

What a brilliant film.  :o

David Niven and William Hartnell were excellent, as usual, and the supporting cast was superb. The class differences being slowly burned away during basic training is utterly believable, and the action scenes when they eventually come are very realistic and genuinely perilous for all involved.

Even The Woman enjoyed it, much to my surprise.

Given the way the film is structured, I kind of look on it as a sort of "Full Tweed Jacket".

The battle at the end is brilliant too. Who couldn't be moved by the resolution of the plucky Tommies? Heavily outnumbered and outgunned, next to no ammunition, down to half strength after a lengthy bombardment, what can they possibly do?

Simple: Fix bayonets, and advance.

Worth checking out if you haven't already. A hugely enjoyable 9/10.

One of my favourite war films. It is perhaps one of the original 'boot camp' pictures which has been copied endlessly since, such as in "Full Metal Jacket" as you say.

I always thought the brief action segment at the end was very well done. Almost a documentary style (you don't even really see much of the Germans, as I recall, they are mostly tiny figures in the distance), not at all like in most films of the period (or indeed any period since).

For the German speaking folks; the film "once upon a time in the west" in Germany had the title, [if I remember well] of: "spiel mir das Lied vom Tod"

I recently watched 'Missing in Action' starring none other than Chuck Norris. I have no idea what it was about, but nevertheless it is quite simply the best film I have ever seen.*

I also saw 'The Eagle has Landed' for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Pretty darn nifty...

*Not really. Lots of explosions though.

Did you know that underneath Chuck Norris' beard, there is no chin...

... there's just another fist.

True story.
