What is the best Old West game?
« on: 16 May 2011, 07:31:54 PM »
Hi fine gents,

I just bought some pretty Blackscorpion cowboys and am in the market for some shiney new rules...

Legends of the old west looks kinda cool (and I love mordheim and it looks a lot like it at first glance...)

Any pointers and first hand experiance i might borrow :)

I think the last time we had this discussion, we split into two main camps. One favored "The Rules With No Name" others preferred Legends of the Old West.  I have both sets and while I haven't played TRWNN yet, I think they look interesting. I say buy both.

I also have both but have never played TRWNN. The rules appeared pretty straightforward.
Legends is basically like the GW's LOTR. I enjoy LOTR a lot so LOTOW is an easy switch.

There's a kid who runs TRWNN at an annual game day here, and I've been in on the last couple of games he's run, and it's easy to play, and pretty fun. I have the rules myself, now, but haven't yet brought them out to learn it better. I can't speak for the GW set, though I have them, too.

I like "Fist Full of Lead" for a great, fun, fast game; it's not complicated and there's no real record keeping so you can just enjoy the game.

This isn't the "popular" opinion on Legends of the Old West but I thought it was like eating cotton candy - an oversweet taste and no substance or nutrition.  Unfortunately, I can't comment on the Rules With No Name.  My tastes lead more towards Yellow Ribbon rules.  I also like some of the concepts in Hey, You In The Jail.  It is good to keep in mind that I don't lean to the game with a couple of dozen figures - or less - but prefer much larger games so my guidance might not work for you.  Just know you've picked the period that, in my opinion, offers the greatest diversity of scenarios to explore.  Enjoy.  ;)

I like Fist Full Of Lead and Gutshot too, but for solo play prefer Sixgun Sound from 2 Hour Wargames. It also plays well in multi-player and has a nice campaign system.

I'm crazy about "6 gun sound" that brings lot of surprises and reallistic situations.
People knows how to play at the end of their first game.

I don't like LOTOW that doesn't allow you to fire on ennemies who would cross the road in front of you before hiding on the other side.

I second Fistful of Lead. Only because I wrote them. Here's a bunch of rules with reviews:
