Hand-made-to-order buildings
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:27:31 PM »
Hi all.

I've just posted a question on my blog regarding whether or not there might be a market for hand-made buildings such as those I built for my town, "Leadwood".

http://colonelotruth.blogspot.com/

I'd appreciate your thoughts, either here or on my blog.

Is there a demand?
What is a fair expectation of price?

Much appreciated!

And I'd say there is almost certainly a market for your work.  Though not me because I'm in the process of scratch building my own old west metropolis.  But many a gamer will drool over yours.  Put some together and take them to the nearest convention with a reasonable price on their vending tables and see what happens.  Probably best way to start - even in the internet age.  Good luck!

I've seen the pictures on the blog and they look awesome.

Maybe you just need to put one picture here as an advert.

Or three.

Seems you posted at the same time I did.

I think postage might be an issue, you being the far side of the globe etc, but could be interested to see the prices.
After all, Battlefront & Eureka manage to get stuff over here.

I'd imagine so, you're a great model maker. Price is always tricky because things are only ever worth what someone might pay.

Perhaps consider making models for casting which would increase your possible sales, lower the prices and maximise turnover.

Col O'Truth - check the prices charged for S gauge kitset wild west buildings from variosu model railway companies - they range from expensive to damned expensive.  I think anything in the range $US30-50 would be a snip for most people.

agree: scratchbuilding is great, and your pieces are really awesome. but you have to consider the number of ours: i make some private lessions to students, and i earn a certain amount of money for hour. why do i have to work for 1/3rd of the wage or less? if you spend 10 hours for a building the price have to be quite high!

probably the casting is a really good option, but learning how to sculpt for a casting is quite different. but i don't think you will find any problem with that!

Lovely pictures thanks for posting.

Great idea and definately a demand, but you might only be limited to southern hemisphere in respect of shipping charges etc...

Good luck

Quite. Modelling for casting is a different beast, but one which can be tamed.

I dont't think it is possible to make scratchbuild buildings at the same price as resin cast buildings; just look at the difference in detailing and finish in Hovel's buildings and the scrathbuild ones. I believe slavery is forbidden since mid 19th century so, even it is just a hobby, you can't expect of someone to make things for just a few dollars an hour.
