Dystopian Wars Questions
« on: May 28, 2011, 04:07:21 AM »
I'm looking at getting into Dystopian Wars and I was wondering if anyone can field a question or two for me...

People have told me that one faction has access to a Giant Mechanical Squid, if this is true, this is the faction I want to play. (someone said it was the Japanese?) The though occurs that it may be an Uncharted Seas figure that someone has mistaken, but nevertheless I can't pass up Robot Squids of Death, can anyone verify this?

Has anyone played it? What is it like? Are the Battleboxes decent sized armies or merely starting points?

Do I need to wash the resin before I paint it?

Thanks in advance...

I just purchased the rule book about 2 weeks ago so I'm just getting into things myself but, yes, it will eventually be the Japanese faction who get the Mechanical Ika (Squid).  It's apparently covered statwise but not modelwise yet.  The Battle Group boxes all contain 13 different ships and some aircraft, each matched in class to the other factions so I guess you could have a fair sized skirmish if each player simply had a box.  That's about all I can say about the game for now but the guy in the store where I bought the rules was very favourably impressed and said it was his favourite game at the moment.

As for washing the resin, it never hurts.

I'd agree on washing the resin.
The Japanese designs look slightly art deco to my eye, but attractive enough.
Personally I like the Prussian zepellins or the American paddle steamers.

Have the rules but haven't played yet, only just picked up the starter boxes, and just waiting for a break in the weather to spray undercoat.

Thanks guys, knowing that the Japanese have an Art Deco feel just confirmed my decision (one of my favorite design periods), I'll be getting the rulebook in a week or two and may bug some club members to buy a Starter Box with me to try it out.

There are 3D mock up images of upcoming models on their forum site.

Hopefully the link below will take you to the Japanese IKA image.

I totally agree the Zep's look smashing, though I just can't get past the top heavy look of the dorsal flight deck. I think the rest of the Prussian fleet looks TOO modern, while the 'mericans (FSA) too archaic.

Britannia has about the right mix. I'm desperately in love with the look of the Sun's carrier.

Not playing myself, but everyone in our locale getting in so far is enjoying it, but the usual complaints about the non-linear rule writing. 'Jump here, jump there to find anything' is a cry that sends heads nodding in the store.

Has anyone tried using these with Leviathan? Don't  you wish the waterline models of these had lower hulls you could attach with magnets for multiple duty? (Not my idea, fair warning.)

The models are prefectly symmetrical, so you could buy a pair of each ship and glue (or attach with magnets) one body upside down to the bottom of the other... chop of the funnels and there you have a lower hull ;) I saw sombody do this on the official forum, can't find the thread now...

I was about to object, but actually makes sense in some cases. The Prussian ships, not so much as I don't appreciate prows up and down, but the Blazing Suns would probably be awesome.

Double cost ships...

Okay, I think I feel objections starting again. ;->=

Hey Hat Guy,

Speak to Tom at the club. He already has a bunch of dystopian wars stuff.

Cheers

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

I own the boxed Prussian set and some extra's. I've played 4 games so far and am enjoying the game. Of course being a big VSF fan helps some too. I've found the rules make much more sense after playing those 4 games, but the jumping around looking for a certain rule is annoying. I suggest doing as I did and go through the rules putting tags at the rules that had come up during the game. Oh I also had my rule book spiral bound, that is a big help.
The box sets provide for decent sized battles, especially when learning the rules. They're approximately 750 to 800 points per box. Each faction has it's own little quirks and edges so of course it's learning how to use those that makes the games interesting.
As The Beast said, it's seem's to be going over well at our store.
I'm also a hugh G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. fan so I plan on using the models for some G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. ship gaming in this scale and probably making Aeronefs out of some of the ships.
