15mm PSC for FOW
« on: 31 May 2011, 01:03:34 AM »
I just ordered one each of all 4 PSC 15mm kits. Would this be enough for 2 people to start FOW? Also what bases should i get for them and what FOW rulebooks do i need. Thanks

Exactly what boxes have you ordered? (  1 Infantry + 1 tank box per player would be enough to start out and get a very good feel for how the basics of the game work).

You can buy separate FoW bases, you only need to do that for your infantry. I think 1 or 2 boxes of loose bases should be enough unless you want to trim medium bases down to small size (I did a few such trimmed bases myself).

If you play Germans vs Russians you would need the basic Flames of War rulebook, either the hardback or the pocket version from the Open Fire! starting box. And the Ostfront to play mid-War eastern front battles.

I'm going to write a "newbie guide to Flames of War" and a overview of the rules towards this weekend on my blog. I'm a relative newbie to FoW myself and had to ask a lot of questions myself to get stuff right  :)

There are 3 types of bases in FoW.

Small = Used for 1-3 infantry, such as command stands, light mortars and man packed weapon teams.

Medium = 4-5 infantry per base, regular infantry teams are based upon these. As are small AT guns, HMG and medium mortar teams etc. Cavalry command is also based upon these.

Large = Used for large artillery and for basing cavalry (4 per base).

The book will tell you how many infantry you will have in each "team" , you could go either by the book and base 5 infantry where the book tells you, or cut corners and base them 4 per base. Does not make any in game impact whatsoever.  Though I guess some nerds might get angry at you for this but as I said it does not impact the rules. Usually you have an equal amount of 5 and 4 man infantry teams within your platoon.

If you want to be 100% sure you should wait until you get the source book for the eastern front.

I based my Polish scouts with only 4 infantry per base to make them easier to pick out on the table and to double as dismounted cavalry.
