Elephant Grass for 28mm Africa
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:14:05 PM »
Chaps,

I am looking to make a large quantity of tall 'elephant grass' to go with 28mm figures - hoping to be able to cover the best part of a 6x4 table to recreate the conditions that the Azande and other tribes fought in!

I have found this excellent article:
http://www.warfactory.co.uk/scenery/lushgrass.php
but have been unable to locate a supplier of the tall grass featured in the first pic. Obviously it's an aquarium product but no luck so far.

Can anyone advise me of a supplier?

Many thanks

James

Have you tried any petshops?  I got a 12 by 12 inch mat at one a couple of years ago.  Failing that some, like Petsmart, sell individual plants (very expensive).  www.recreationalconflict.com under Plastic trees sells them by the dozen, or you could try ordering them from a cake decorating supplier.  These work pretty well and are 2" tall without a base.

I've got stuff from eBay very similar to that in the past.

Try these (three slightly different types):

Not sure which side of the pond you are on - but the most common source of that particular aquarium plant (and very cost effective one at that) are from what are known as breeding mats.

http://www.fishandfins.co.uk/weed.htm (towards the bottom) - For the UK and EU

http://www.redwoodaquatics.co.nz/product_pcid_552.html - For those on the bottom

http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10983/product.web - For those in North America

There are different styles of it - and I am sure if you poke around some, you can find better prices on them (eBay generally is a good source).

Craft shops, here in the US for example, JoAnn's and Micheals carry that type of "grass" on 6 inch square matts.

You could try the fake grass approach

Seen some fascinating examples using fake fur cloth:

http://www.elladan.de/002%20fur%20mat%20WiP/002.htm

A bit of extra work, but it seems to look pretty darn good, and the ability to drape it and roll it like a felt mat is a nifty bonus.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

If you were living in Germany then you could get lorry loads of it as they use it a lot at Easter time and it is generally available from the IDEE arts and craft stores all year round.

Not seen it in the UK or North America yet.
