Reaper Shoggoth
« on: June 25, 2011, 03:00:45 PM »

http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/previews/latest/50248

It's certainly very squamous and amorphous, so much so it's difficult to comprehend exactly what's going on, but...
The hell is that sphere?

I for one can't wait for this thing's release so I can get a glimpse of a painted model.

I think I'll be using it more as a Colour than a shoggoth - the sphere would function perfectly as some cosmic globule of phosphorescence, the tentacles some vague mist or tangible jelly fog.

What does everyone else think?

It could be used as either Colour or Shoggoth, depending on how you painted it. I would paint the sphere as a big Eye to make it a Shog, but as a Colour, I would stay with grays and silvers, highlight with white on the psuedopods and then use select glazes of primary colors on the spheres.

Reminds me as a kid we'd play Ping Pong in the garage.

Occassionally, you'd have to retrieve the ball that bounced under a counter or something.  It usually came up looking like that.

It just doesn't say Shoggoth to me, I'm usually a big fan of Reaper monsters but for me this one is an easy pass. I think the Tengu Shoggoth a little while back spot-on nailed it.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

It's alright but yeah it doesnt feel like a Shoggoth to me either.

I think it would work better as some spawn of Yog-Sothoth considering the sphere on it.

Yeah didn't get the Shoggoth feel either. It makes you wonder when folks are designing minis- in this case specifically for example- how much reading/research they did into say Lovecraft's description, in this case, of the Shoggoth or just looked at existing miniatures made and added their flourish onto it, thinking it will slide.

Sounds harsh, but not meant to be. Just a passing though that found its way immortalized on the internet. Hmmph...

But you're right on its potential for other things represented. Any chaotic squirming mass will have a place in games like ours, if I may be so presumptuousness in saying so.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is less about making a miniature that accurately represents the literature and more about making a funky, tentacled, chaotic eye beast...Shoggoth was just the nearest word that fit the bill.

They do keep an eye on other companies, and try to avoid reinventing the wheel unless they can add something to it.  Since there are already several excellent shoggoth available, I think they went with something that was less the classical form - but something that could still work.  Considering the description, this would work well enough - though the large central eye is a bit atypical, even for something that is amorphous and ever changing.

don't care for it myself. :(
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

What does everyone else think?

Looks like a pudding caught in a rolling rock trap. That's the only way I can see it. Maybe Tre can explain what's going on there.

Something in that combination reminds me of this although not quite...

Well, Tre Manor's own last miniature, called 'lesser infernal horror', looks much more like a shoggoth:
