Rules for 10mm?
« on: July 16, 2011, 07:38:10 PM »
Hello,
I want to play some games at 10mm scale (1866 Austro-Prussian war and 1882 Anglo-Egyptian to begin with), but really have no idea what rules are used at this scale. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
I told you so. You damned fools.

I'd say that looking for a set of rules dependent on scale might be the wrong way of looking at it. If you already know of a good ruleset it doesnt normally take too much to change some of the measurements.

Up here we tend to favour 10mm for games like FoW. Even some other nice traditionally 15mm games like DBA or FoG are easily adapted by keeping the same size elements but putting more figs on each base.

Not knowing much about the periods you mentioned I don't know off-hand a set to recommend. Rank and File is a fairly nifty set for getting a resolution in an evening that is easily suited to 10mm. Black Powder is another popular set but not without its flaws according to some of the guys at our club. Failing this, a search of Free Wargames Rules can often throw up some gems.

What size games are you thinking? What amount of time do you have for a game? Factors like this will make a huge difference to your choice of rules.

Yes! Ok, fair enough. I probably should have asked:

Can anyone recommend a good set of rules for Brigade-scale actions in the later Victorian era, 1860-1885?

Also, for those of you who do play 10mm, how do you base your figures?  I like the idea of having lots of figures on a single large base, but am not sure it would make for a useful gaming piece...

We've had some great 10mm Franco-Prussian games using Black Powder, scaled down by using cm instead of inches.

our figures are multi-based in the warmaster style 10 inf or 4 cavalry on a 40x20mm base. using 3-4 bases per unit.
