Starting a fleet. What rules to use?
« on: July 25, 2011, 06:51:20 PM »
Hi,
I've started to build two or maybe three small fleets. I know which rulesets I could try for dogfights, but I'm looking for something to play with a squadron of fighters vs. fighters but also and especially, vs. capital ships. If you ever played the PC game "Wingcommander" you'll know what I'm looking for. Any ideas? TIA

While I haven't played it and it uses cardstock models for the ships, have you looked at World Works Games spaceship combat game Wormhole http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=catalog&cat_id=8&genre_id=2

It might work for what you want, I imagine you can use your own ships in place of their cardstock ship models.

Granted I am not a space combat gamer so my knowledge of whats out there is severely limited.

Excellent ships.  Are those petri dish bases?  Fantastic.
This is my boomstick!

@Eldorf, I'll check them. Cheers.
@DoomsDave, I'm afraid I don't know what are petri bases. These ones came with the ships and in fact, I'm not going to use them as they are too big to play with them.
Cheers,

You might also want to check out Starmada. It's my favorite spaceship combat game.

All you need are the Starmada Core Rulebook

And maybe the STARMADA RULES ANNEX

Full Thrust 2 by Ground Zero Games is good and free!

Rumour has it that Ganesha Games, creator of Song of Blades is also working on a set of rules.

A good place to check out is here:

All the best!

I'm a huge FTII fan, and I know someone worked up K'ilrathi ship designs at one time, but worthy of mentions are G.O.B.S. and A Sky Full of Stars. The first is totally free as far as I know, and the second has a simple rule set available for free, with a larger pay version on RPGNOW.

There is/was a Space Cruiser Yamato based game from Musashi Enterprises, but I found it a bit daunting from the buckets o' missiles point of view.

Unfortunately, it's been so long since I watched someone playing WC, never played myself, I'm not sure which system to suggest.

I can't help with rules, but do want to say those ships look great!

Try 'bag the hun' it's wwii aircraft, but easily modified to cinematic starfighter games. Plus it has rules for sinking battleships and the like, so you might find it good that way. Or you could just wait for the ones I've been working on for the past few years...
