It only looks complicated at first, like Crimson skies., And, yes, I'd say that KH is great for Wing Commander type action.
Did you look up ART Eaton's KH Vector? That one is a bit more complicated, but more realistic in the representation of movement. I don't use it myself, but the KH core rules. Those are posted free @
www.starfrontiers.com. You have to register there, but its free, and he doesn't keep track of downloads for wotc, just to keep certain individuals from overloading his boards (on purpose) Thjey are free to download. There is a simpl and advanced board game.
There are 2 main movement scores Acceleration/Deceleration Factor(ADF) And Movement Rating (MR).
A fighter Hull size one (about 10 meters long and 2 meters diameter) Has an ADF/MR of 5/5 That means the fighter can speed up or slow down 5 hexes per turn. There is no upper limit to speed, but you gotta be careful not to fly off of the board. MR means how many hex side facing turns per turn you can take.
The core KH weapons are assault rockets (5 meters long, the fighter's main weapon and only fighters and Assault Scouts carry them AS's are HS 3, 10-15 man ships) Laser battery, Proton beam battery, Electron beam battery , Rocket battery, (Fires a brace of rockets, slightly smaller than AR's) Torpedoes(Massive, 15 Meter long Nuke warheaded monsters which need a HS 5 Minimum to carry them) Laser Cannon (Also need HS 5 to carry, and Disruptor Cannon(A combinitatiobn of Electron and Proton beams but in one LARGE package.
AR's, Torpedos, L Cannon and Disrupror Cannon are Forward firing only, LB's, RB's, EB's, and PB's are 360 degree firing.
In KH, the weapons are artificially light per ship load, but that's for simplification of turns.
The turns are meant to represent instantaneous action
The side w/ imitative moves first, the second team has opportunity fire, the first team fires main weapons,The second team moves, the first team has opportunity fire, the second team's main weapons fire; next round.
Fast, exciting, there are shields for every weapon, and the game can be readily adapted. Some guys I know play Starfleet (Star Trek) battles with this instead of the official rules, they feel these are faster, easier, and more adaptable.
