What rules for 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'?
« on: 20 August 2011, 07:07:03 AM »
I was watching the movie earlier today... and while there were lots of things I didn't like about it (especially vs. the comic) the concept is, of course, very appealing for gaming.
It's pretty much a low-powered superhero movie...
I've seen discussions on here regarding figures but what set of rules would allow to do something similar... small skirmish where we create characters/creatures/machines with various powers and have them smack each other around... while keeping to a somewhat VSF feel with the weapons and mechanisms?
Something that works well with scenarios and stories... small campaigns.

My first thought was to just use the combat rules from an RPG with DIY rules for 'powers'... but I'm curious what others have done...

I have used Gaslight for my games using the characters , IN VFS there in the book i belive. If you wanted a  small fast  game then Makis CROM rules would work.., and  crooked dices game systems would also work for heroes and 1969 the new comic etc...(still need warrior women from the moon)

Check out SuperSystem.  It's a super hero game, which would be perfect for this type of thing.  The same system was used to make the Victorian horror game Chaos in Carpathia and the pulp adventure game Chaos in Cairo.

I think Legends of the Old West will do the job nicely.  Simple mechanics.  Easily modified.  'Powers' can be easily created or represented.  And the rules give a jolly good skirmish game.

Also while designed for roughly equal posses, i think it'd also work very well for a small goup of high quality 'heroes' facing larger numbers of low-powered 'redshirts'.

The real strength of LotOW is in its campaign play too so you could definately exploit that with the characters gradually developing new skills and abilities over the course of a campaign...

There was an article in one of the wargames magazines years ago on gaming this. I could probably dig it out if your interested?

Continued by Gaslight?

Just a suggestion, haven't played it, but my understanding is it's designed for more 'Pulp Hero' types (heroes or small parties of characters against faceless hordes).

Thanks for the suggestions! So many options!
Some of these rules I'd never heard of... but they all sound pretty great.
The GASLIGHT Compendium and .45 Adventures have been on my list for a while.

We've got a copy of Supersystem around somewhere... not sure if it's the latest version or not... so that would be easy enough to try out.
