Xenobiological Alien Races?
« on: September 03, 2011, 03:32:31 PM »
Would anyone at all happen to know of any truly alien aliens for future based wargames?
I've always disliked the image of a universe/multiverse populated sheerly by humanoid sapient species, because of the fact that this would never EVER happen due to every planet being isolated from one another by the cruel cold blackness of space. Convergent evolution could never be that precise on that many worlds.
I'm looking for strange, xenobiological, alien alien species to populate my miniature spaceways and battlefields with.
Any suggestions?
Sapient/intelligent/sentient beings are preferred, but alien monsters and fantasy creatures which could be easily converted are nice too.

NO Cthulhu shit.
It's much too recognizable as mythos work and borders on the supernatural rather than the scientific.

Tyrannids?

Apart from Genestealers they're very alien, and even Genestealers have non-anthropomorphic elements (eg, six limbs).

But the problem there is that Tyranids are easily recognizable as Tyranids - that and they're just human enough to displease me.
Of course one could always make a menagerie of even more bizarre creatures from nid parts.

Hydra Minis and Killer B Games both have aliens.  Hydra has Slishians, both civilians and armed figures http://shop.hydraminiatures.com/index.php?cPath=2_37 plus a couple of others.  Killer B has several different alien species http://killerbgames.com/index.php?cPath=2&osCsid=f9065efd97f9fa7da88ac5a088bf0822, mostly armed and two sets of miners.

How about some of the Cthulhu type creatures?

There were some non-humanoid figures in the Dreamblade series too.

Some of these Hasslefree aliens are brilliant.

I've started a Mesaan army. Gonna use both Mesaan Bosses, loads of Mesaan grunts, Mini Mawes, Mawes and Kiergi. Somewhere on Forum Of Doom Inso has done a really nice alien army out of the Agarix too. Here it is:

Hope this helps.

Some really excellent stuff so far!
I'll contribute a little myself with the Khurasan Vornids - sapient, shambling flytrap plants with biological weaponry.

At 15 MM, both their size and their sculpts will make them seem more alien compared to 20 mm figures.
I suggest painting them in flesh tones rather than greens if you decide you want an even more odd alien plant - if you want them to be a plant at all..

I think much of the stuff from any cthulu range will fit the bill pretty well. Also take a look in local toy shops, toy crabs, spiders could be easily converted and would fit the bill. Blobs of randomly painted greenstuff will also work - highly evolved jellyfish.

Though I do adore Cthulhu and pals, I've had to edit the criteria of the first post to phase such suggestions out.

Keep 'em coming, gentlemen!

Supervike beat me to it, these are about as alien as you can get.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

I DO really love the sculpts for the Primeval Abyssian races, I can't believe I forgot about them.
