Not to be too critical, considering the nice work you put into hand-painting the shields, but I always understood that Wardancers didn't use any armour and shields can be considered armour, in the broadest sense.  Wardancers were noted for using their speed and acrobatic abilities to quickly get into, and out of, close combat, using one or two hand weapons like swords, knives and axes.  A shield would be a definite liability in that kind of fight.

I've still got a bunch of those older figures myself, buried somewhere down in my dungeon.  I must say I really like a lot of the new version Wardancers, though, particularly the ones called Woven Mist and Shadow Coil.

Well, you are probably referring to later Wardancer incarnations.  Back in '88 with the Warhammer Armies book listing all armies available, Wardancers had a greater selection of weapons and armor.

These were assembled and painted back then, when Wardancers were IMO at their finest!  If you will look closely you will see that they had full body chainmail with plate on some of them.  They were more Road Warrior types than the near naked versions that came much later.

If you go to my blog you'll see the other minis and it will all make more sense.

Yes, these are a fine selection of Jes Goodwin wardancers - I have quite a few myself.

One of them - also sporting a shield, is 'starring' in a little AAR I'm writing up: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=31970.15

Also, Orcs used to have crossbows, etc.  ::)

Looks like we're both right.  In my copy of Warhammer Armies (1988), the vanilla Wardancer had a hand weapon and no armour.  Anything else (extra/different weapons, shields or light armour) was strictly optional, adding 1 or 2 points each to the base cost of your model.  Your helmeted Sea Elf, for example, would have cost 23 points, compared to the normal 20.

yeah, they had shields, and double handed weapons, and halberds, spears, and javelins.  Light armor & Shields.

Those were the days!

Yes the days when you could practical give a model anything you liked. My only comment is why sharks on the shields? Seems a bit odd considering their normal considered to be woodelves.

Ah, so THAT'S what I need to do to get folks to click through to my new blog. ;) Nice to see some nice original paintjobs from back in the day.  :) You know, the unit might be deserving of cleaning up the bases to make them cohesive. Try as I might though I can't not comment on those weird shark shields. One is weird enough but I doubt wardancers, being individualistic folk as I understand them, would suffer another in the unit to have the same design.  ;)

Well, I'm not going to repair the bases so much as strip the models and repaint & base them altogether.  I just wanted to share some of my early work since I actually retrieved some from my friend.

As for the shark shields, the original inspiration was from Mike McVey's own wood elves whose wardancers all had round shields with red talons on them.

GW was moving from the collection of individuals in a unit to the 'make em all tie together' philosophy and since I was 18 at the time, I drank the cool aid.

I'll post new stuff as I paint it.

Me too G.  Every time I see old school in a thread I have to check it out.  Especially for GW/Citadel minis.  The newer stuff looks awful IMO.
