Terrain from fur mats - this time for 20 mm
« on: 04 October 2011, 08:10:43 PM »
Hi,

over the last months I finished two smaller fur mats in 60 x 60 cm.  I did them for a customer in the USA who wants to use them for 20 mm miniatures (scale 1:72). Two more pieces in this scale are planed to be done in the next months. (Note: Normaly I don't accept orders for fur mats).

The Tank and the (sadly still unpainted) Grenadier are both 20 mm and are added to show the relative scale.

The next pictures show the first fur mat. Starting with a WiP shot showing the mat before painting:

Some pictures of the finished piece:

The next photos show the second fur mat after shaving and half painted. This time I added some bomb craters and a dirt road:

Pictures of the finished mat:

Pictures with some cloth put under the fur mat to simulate lower hills:

More pictures of this furmats can be found on my homepage:

And before you ask - the faux-fur I used can be found and perhaps be purchased from this (German) Online-Shop:

Greetings from Germany

PS: The third piece of furmat is already shaved, painted and photographed. The lone 20 mm Grenadier is painted too. I still have to rework the pictures an upload them on my homepage.

I love beautiful terrain.

Wow that looks really good. Definitively something I'll have to consider using for my next project.

They do look great and I've considered doing it myself, but been stopped by the thought of how well minis (especially plastics) would stand up on them or whether the fur would tip the mini over.

Had the same thought myself, but would be worth doing in smaller patches because it looks so good!

Thanks for the tip!

Those really are lovely. Love the way the grass catches the light and certainly seems more versatile than I had originally thought with bare, patchy and shorter areas of grass etc.

Elladan,
The mats look great.
Your how- dos about making terrain mats, were what inspired me to try my hand at making some.
I made some for a WWII Normandy game.
Thanks alot.

Hello,
and thank you for the nice comments.

@ dijit and Mason: On all my different furmats the miniatures could be placed without any problems, even the small plastic 1:72 Grenadier on a little coin (shown on the pictures in this post).

Last week I finally finished my third piece of furmat in this series of smaller pieces.

I managed to take a lot of pictures of an new piece of furmat - together with the one I showed above - an some 20 mm models. I hope you like it.

And finally some pictures with the two mats rolled up (like a small carpet). This is one of the great advantages of this kind of terrain - it can easyly be stored and transported.

More lovliness!

I was most definitely not being critical with my comments, Elladan.

I think every single one of your mats are absolutely amazing and thank you for the tips.

I will be on the look out for some, even if I do cut them up to add small patches of detailing to various pieces that I have already made and projects in the future.

Thanks Elladan, I'm thinking I might have to give it a go.
