British Drummer uniform details
« on: 08 October 2011, 01:22:45 AM »
Hello,
I'm making my first attempts at some colonial figures (first historical figures, really), and I've chosen some Perry Sudan range British infantry.  I am having difficulty finding any references for painting the drummers supplied in the infantry command blister.  Could anyone point me towards a reference?  I would be grateful for any information on the subject.
Thanks, Chris

I can't give a definative answer I'm afraid as I'm not a uniform expert, but I don't ever recall seeing or hearing any mention of distinct drummer uniforms for this period. Personally I'd simply use the same dress as the rest of the regiment.

Seems to be the way to go.  I don't recall there being any different uniforms for buglers/drummers at this time.

Thank you for your responses.  I was thinking of using the same uniform, though I'm not sure if the drum itself should be painted in any particular way.
Thanks, Chris

If you want to represent a specific regiment then you could do a lot worse than drop an email to the regimental museum. In my experience the staff are always very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I've seen some drums shown as polished yellow metal, but if the regiment is wearing khaki or grey then some sort of drab cover in a similar colour would seem appropriate.

As a rule, one third of the drum would look essentially like the regimental colours (facing color backgound with regimental crest & battle honours).  The rest would be either wood or brass (depending on the period).  Hoops are blue, with red edges and a white wavy stripe in the center (although this varied, and at scale probably best left red).  Tension ropes: white,  Heads: buff.
