Fantasy/Epic/Mythic Asian Miniatures
« on: 15 October 2011, 10:14:45 PM »
Hey all,

I am considering doing a skirmish miniatures game that combines elements of asian myth and legend with martial arts fighting. I've been inspired by kung-fu movies, Chinese adventure/romances, Japanese samurai adventure flicks and comics such as Blade of the Immortal and Lone Wolf and Cub.

What I am looking for are figures that are less battlefield ready and more the sorts of figures to be encountered on the road, in town, etc. I'd also love to find figures for mythic elements such as ghosts, demons, spirits, etc. The last thing, which seems most difficult to find are more characterful asian-themed characters like big bruisers, wicked-looking bandits, etc..

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Look at Cavalcade (their fantasy samurai and wako pirate ranges) and that company that makes the old Clan War range now.

Perry Miniatures and Old Glory have asian civilians in their ranges.

Thanks for that. Cavalcade is right here in my neck of the woods.

One thing I forgot to mention was a source for seperate 28mm asian weapons. I can convert a lot of figs to fit my needs.

All of these are Japanese (or Japanese themed) figures:

A Japanese Oni: http://www.riceballminiatures.com/oniFL.html

Kingsford miniatures come with separate weapons, but they don't sell them by themselves... if you asked nicely they might sell them to you: http://www.kingsfordminiatures.org/index.html

Clan war figures: http://www.veltd.net/28mmclanwar.htm

I hope some of this is of help

Museum miniatures sell separate weapons.

And there's always Bushido for more individual figures. I've got two of the starter sets and the sculpting is rather nice.

Sebastian Archer does some really nice character figures:

Reaper also has a few oriental figures, as does Hasslefree.

Otherworld's hobgoblins might fit in as may a couple of the Tékumel figures.
Other than those last two straggling ideas the wonder that is LAF seems to have listed everything that I thought of and much more! 8)

I almost forgot - there is [was] that French company - Kraken, or some such. One of the factions was asian.

If your are looking for scenic items those Warmachine (Hordes) way stones (or warp stones?) make good waymarkers or milestones to spice up the table. I'm using them as such fot Tekumel gaming.
