Dog-heads
« on: October 16, 2011, 08:37:23 PM »
Scouring my books (and the web, of course  ::)) for some 'authentic' medieval monsters - the sort that can be found in Mallory or illuminated manuscripts - I've come up against a few references to dog-headed men. Apparently in some traditions St. Christopher was one, so while they obviously weren't all bad I thought I might include them as adversaries for my questing knights.

Anyway, I've utterly failed to find any suitable dog-headed men miniatures in 28mm, or even any conversion sprues I could use. Does anyone have any ideas?

Crocodile Games Anubi?

Might be a bit too "ancient" rather than medieval, given what you have planned, but should be some conversion potential at least.

Not sure who stocks them in the UK though.  :?

Lots of old Citadel Beastmen have dog heads, esp. the Khorne variety. They can usually be picked up fairly cheaply, tho if you are looking to build a whole army, expect to pay! Or at least to take a loooong time...

It may not be your sort of thing, but Gnolls could fit this bill.
The Iron Wind Gnolls are some of the most 'human' that I have found.

I do love Dogheads, but I've never seen just the right miniatures.

From the period images, they looked just like humans, but with the head of a dog.  If you could find some dogs in the right scale and head swap them it could work, but it's beyond my skill level.

West Wind (Old Glory in the US, I think) has various WW2 German dogmen (Alsatian, Rottweiler etc) in its Secrets of the Third Reich range.  IIRC, they aren't armed and are just clothed in ragged trousers, so may be useable for medieval Europe.
Back from the dead, almost.

I've been fascinated by dog-men for ages. the only ones that might have been good enough are the early Citadel Beastmen, from even before the Khorne beastmen. but alas, they're unavailable.

I own this great book titled Myths of the Dog-Man, by David Gordon White, which is a nice read, esp. on the legend of St. Christophore.

apparently, part of the cynocephali myth comes from distorted descriptions of baboons. Some proper baboons are available. Crocodile Games does a set of 'ghouls' that come closest to dogmen as I like them, even though they're too monstrous with huge teeth.

Gnolls may work, but usually are either too big or too much like hyenas or wolves.

Cynocephali, Blemmyae, Manticores, Wild-Men... Where are they!!
If you don't believe in lead, you're already dead.

Hear, hear!

Thanks for all the other replies, chaps. I'm still looking, though - none of them quite fit the bill for me  :(
