'Planes' in VSF
« on: 20 October 2011, 06:24:56 PM »
As the question asks, do people like the idea of having 'planes' in the neff world.

There was a very nice thread a few weeks ago with a red one and it fitted with the general feel of VSF.

There are obviously aircraftcarrier neffs but why use planes and not really small neffs?

Thoughts and comments would be welcome  :)

cheers

I am not really sure. At first I would say no, but it might work if the execution was right. But I think it very easy would make more of a steam punk than VSF feel for me.

If planes were to be used I would suggest to make it really special and only one or few ones and as very experimental stuff from insane sciantist or such.

I'd tend to discount as ship killers, but for local recce, large ship deck crew and small 'nef and dig harassment and the like, they'd seem good.

I got started in VSF gaming when I came across Major General Tremorden Reddering's page. There, they have steam helicopters and early reconaissance airplanes. IMHO, the Major General can do no wrong! :)

Planes would have to have the right "feel," though...

Depends how it was done. I'm intending to do some for the Venizian forces but they'd be based on the Da Vinci flyer in design.
So many projects..... so little time.......

That would seem appropriate.

I would think it is more important to stay clear of WW1 designs, as (for me) it quickly give more thaughts of trench war then victorian colonialism.

Option three could be better phrased. ;)

Not keen myself, unless they are very different in design to early planes. I associate VSF with neffs and airships, but not planes, funny eh?

A thought provoking question though. :)

It might be doable with some of the near-successes from the decade that preceded the wright brothers. But I agree that even so they should be kept rare or special.

Good question. I'm with Malamute, for me it would have to be something other than the conventional design of planes we have come to know. I'm happy with nefs, blimps and wacky flapping things at the moment but I'm always ready to be persuaded otherwise.

I think what your poll will highlight is the varied interpretations of VSF which is a healthy thing and keeps this board alive.

Not sure about Steam planes but I've recently built a meta-clockwork ornithopter for my Gaslight army which is based on a WWI German Albertross model. I decided on a clockwork mechanism as the need to have flapping wings andclockwork seemed to work well together. It also negates the need for heavy iron furnaces and boilers which seem impracticle for the concept of light weight vessels.

This is the one I was referring to in the original post  :)

Now then, apart from what has been mentioned already, does anyone have any sort of pictorial reference  ;)

cheers
