Introduction & Would you want to see this thread?
« on: 26 November 2007, 11:54:53 PM »
Hi, I should probably introduce myself in the tangency forum, but since the old west forum is the only one I’m here for right now, I’ll bore you all with a quick introduction…and then a question.

I’m 39 years old, live in Wisconsin, and am returning to miniature gaming after a long (7-8) year layoff.  I used to play WFB, 40K, Mordheim, and Star Wars Miniature Battles (D6 system) primarily.  I played religiously for about 10 years (4th-6th ed. Warhammer…if that sets the era :)).  I was really into the entire hobby, painting, terrain building, and at the end competition (even won a best painted at an RT for my Goblin Army)

I left the hobby after an ugly divorce where I lost my house, my basement, my huge gaming table, had to sell off most of my miniatures, rules, terrain, and everything else (but believe me, the divorce was the best thing to ever happen to me!).  To top it off, my group started to split up and go their own way at the same time.  I got back into role playing (cheaper and takes less room) and have been doing that ever since.

Lately I decided to get back into wargaming again.  I looked around for the perfect game, and decided Legends of the Old West was it.  Not only is it from a company I know I can trust to produce good rules but it is also a new miniature genre for me to explore.  I’ve started reading westerns too to get me in the mood.

So Hi, I’ll be around for a while :)

Now a question…

I have the rule book on order, some minis on order, and am slowly assembling all the gear I need to dive back into the hobby.  Would anyone like to see a thread describing the entire process from a as-I-read review of the rulebook, to getting my table ready to go, to getting my armies painted up, to a battle report of my first game?

It would be a long thread, and kind of blog-esque…but it would keep me motivated, allow me to ask questions as I go, and give a reference point for others who are debating getting into the hobby or picking up this particular game.

Or wouldn’t this be the place?

Thanks

Sounds good to me, but I don't speak for the whole forum, or in any official capacity.

Old (or Wild) West ain't really my thing, but I still think I would find a topic describing this process an interesting one to follow.

I think its an excellent idea. It's always cool to see how players develop their hobby interests. But mostly we get "starting a new genre". Here we would get to see from the beginning.

I'd love to see such a thread. I find it fascinating to see how others become enthused by a project & then set about making it a reality.

I'm tempted to do something similar with my Samurai project. I haven't the time or interest to do a full-blown blog, but an sporadic thread here might be feasible. Hmmm....

Great!  Sounds like enough interest.  As soon as the book arrives I'll start reading, posting, and being productive (hopefully :)).

I should add that 1 year after that divorce I met my current wife (and first soulmate).  We dated for 5 years and have been married for 1.  That's her hand holding the pistol on my avatar

As another person getting back into minis gaming (only three years off though) with LotOW, I'd love to see how your experience plays out.

Life is disappointing!  I'm all geared up to do this thread...but my distributor has failed me twice :(.  First the book never shipped because it was on backorder, then it never arrived on the second promise date...now he has no idea when the order will be fulfilled (and the problem isn't on his end, he has always been very reliable).  So here I sit, gathering materials and miniatures...but with no rulebook!

So, I've looked all over online and have found that this book is very hard to get indeed.  Almost all the online stores I frequent (in the USA) either don’t carry it, or have been “temporarily” out of stock since I started looking.  I can’t even get it on Amazon.  There is one or two that still have it, but don’t accept paypal (the only way I do business online).

So I’m wondering what gives with this game that it is so hard to get (in the states anyway, seems like it’s all over the place oversees)?

Grubman, if you can't find the rulebook anywhere, might I suggest you try Gutshot over at Hawgleg.com? I've played both LotOW and Gutshot; they're both great, but I prefer Gutshot for its more personable, up-close combat (and Hawgleg accepts Paypal!) :)

And I like your thread idea. I'm doing the same thing over at Hawgleg and on my own blog (though admittedly only covering more of the hobby aspects of my gaming and less biography on the rules, gaming aspects, and personal experiences associated with getting my game together.)

I can only second the proposition on starting with Gutshot.

Very good ruleset, and you can get started with way fewer models and then expand into the posses of LotOW later.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!
