My biggest problem I'm going to have is how to do the actual clock.

Anybody got Amy other ideas?

Cheers!

Solve your biggest problem by losing the clock altogether. The present clock tower is dated 1859, so is about 250 years too late. The parliament website notes that the medieval clock tower from 1367 was derelict by 1699, so was probably getting tatty in 1605 anyway. There's an engraving at http://www.cosmicelk.net/bigben.htm showing a relatively simple tower.

Alternatively, if it's after Fawkes' powder went off, a suitably large rubble heap should suffice!
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Take apart an old watch or find a supplier of watch faces and hands?

Build one clock face, and cast 3 sections of it to put on the other sides. (damaged faces) that way you'll have one face intact to show its the iconic Big Ben, and three ruined faces showing Bens been brought low.

Relieved to see a few pointers about the difference in the HoP then and more recently.

Laser etching for the clock face would probably be the quickest way. Aside from originating the artwork file there'd be little else to do.

Had Fawkes celebrated we'd likely still celebrate - just it'd be the destruction as the focus.

Victoria Tower is my fave bit of the Palace of Westminster, originally it was going to hold every piece of legislation created by parliament. A safe archive long over filled... it's a shame we can't limit Parliament's laws to whatever they can store on paper in that tower, and give us all a break from nanny state rules.

I suppose in the long term it would have been a different comonwealth, if I remember werent the plotters Catholic? so they would not be popular for the masses who were fervently protestant.

However with the restoration after Cromwells death I think something much like this would have happened but perhpas there could be more intervention form foreign parts :)

WOW!! :o :o Thanks very much guys for all the feedback and information!

Can't see it being much of a challenge for a man of your considerable talents :D

Great idea as well, I guess thats next years game sorted out lol

He's at it again and he's only just got back from this years  :o lol 8)

I could help you out with that one  ;) ;)

Really looking forward to the game format  :)

cheers

James

I'm afraid I hadn't thought of a game from this. Myself, Gamer Mac and Oldskoolrebel have some completely different ideas for games next year! ;)

Cheers Jim, I'll send a PM your way soon.

The current Houses of Parliament were built by the Victorians, so your scenery is 250 years too early.

In all honesty Joroas, I just fancied destroying Big Ben( in model form of course) and I thought it might be appropriate for this time year. I could always use it for a War of the Worlds game. Maybe the tripods have zapped it!

The only problem is, in my opinion, I think the clocks the most iconic part. The rest of the model I think I can get away with roughly being Big Ben shaped tower and it'll be enough to fool most people's eyes, but the clock everybody recognises! It's not a scale model by any standards. I dare say if you counted the cornices and alcoves and stuff it won't match!

Take apart an old watch or find a supplier of watch faces and hands?

The problem would be to get one in scale bud. I think I'll try building it or speaking to the talented Mr Jimbibbly.

Thanks guys for all the history, drawings and videos, I've learned a lot and it's very useful for what I'm trying to do!

Cheers!

Just a small update. I think that I've finished building up until the clock section....

I've just got to add some sand and gravel to make the rubble look a bit better. The printed clock faces are just there so I can see where I'm going with this. Hopefully I'll get some bits and pieces to save me try to build something so intricate!

I applaud the detail so far.

You might want to get the clock hands telling the same time when you finally secure them. ;)

Oh wow.  :o Thats looking fantastic already.

Be great in the final scene in the British 'Planet of the apes'.

Cast Gerard Butler in Chucky Heston role and change the dialogue.
Instead of the "you fools" bit he surely has to say "you f***ing numpties"

Sorry EG, but I wouldn't even know how to start something like that! Also it's a big model, it'd cost a lot.

My good lady has started redecorating again and one of the things I've grabbed is the wall clock before it gets in the bin. In the clock theres a square clock mechanism about 55mm x 55mm. I reckon I could get this big Ben to work and actually tell time if I got another three of these things!
