Star Trek TNG ship miniatures?
« on: 13 November 2011, 08:24:08 AM »
Having seen some of Doc Twilight's fantastic TOS miniatures, I've been tempted to get some for ages.  However much as I like the original series (and it's got a lot to recommend it), I've always preferred the TNG era (possibly because it was on BBC2 when I was a kid) and so I was wondering if anyone knew of any manufacturers making models for these ships.

Micromachines did a range of plastics, and so do Furuta.  They were scaled for the box, though.

Try the Starship Combat Forum.
There are to subsections that are a goldmine for all kind of starship models.
The Print On Demand Miniatures section:

The Shapeways Store Listing has some interesting links to STNG ships. Not cheap but nice enough.

and the Orbital Shipyards:

Wow... some of those Shapeways threads are full of some UNsatisfied customers!  Claims that models arrived mutilated or unusable due to low detail levels...  that's not encouraging given the expense involved :P  And yet, others show pics of some marvelous little models posted by happy gamers.  ???

Shapeway quality depends a lot on the material chosen.
"Strongl White flexible" is very strong (aha) but also very rough, needs heavy sanding that sometimes obscures the details - NOT recommended for ships, OK for bigger models.
Example:

"White Detail" is smoother and usually gives abtter result, good enough for starships. - OK
Example:

"Frosted Ultradetail" is the best, some production lines are still visible - Recommended
